I first started creating a multi-day route for a ride around Scotland over 2yrs ago. Covid intervened and I kept tweaking the route as I discovered more things that I wanted to see.
The issue that I am having is the arrows indicating direction of travel will for no apparent reason will double back on the route. I have “optimized” the route. I have zoomed all the way in and made sure that all of the shaping points are located in the centre of the road. I still cannot fix the bloody thing. It is, honestly, almost at the point where I discard the idea of transferring the route to the zumo and simply take a paper map.
Issues..
Re: Issues..
Doubling back normally happens when you place a point the wrong side of a dual carriageway, have you checked for that?
If you have perhaps try posting your gpx file here for others to look at.

Re: Issues..
I'll take another look if you want Bob - you have my email address.
Is this fault appearing on Basecamp, or when you get it into the satnav ?
'Optimize Route' may not be giving you what you want. I believe that it is a facilty which finds the most 'efficient' way of joining up the points - say if the points were addresses and you were a delivery company, wanting to find which order to visit the addresses to minimise the distance travelled.
I may be wrong, but I checked it out a good while ago, and that was the impression that I got.
(edit)
Yes - I am wrong. Scrub that. I have just tried it again a couple of times - and that theory is now disproved. In both attempts taking 10 random points from my last trip to Scotland, the optimzed route was longer in distance and time than using the points to make a nice neat circuit.
So now, my best answer to what 'Optimize' does is that I haven't got a clue - but it is definitely not giving me anything that I would want.

Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Re: Issues..
Hello John,
Thankyou for your kind and generous offer.
The errors show up when the route is viewed in Basecamp. I’m going to take another look at it next week after I return from taking the Vincent to a specialist in Minneapolis - an 8hr drive away, to have some deficiencies addressed..

Ok. Any time you want, just send it.
In the meantime, check your profile and remove any avoidances that you have set. Fastest time with nothing ticked in the avoidances works well. You may wish to tweak it later for anything that you can duplicate on the satnav. eg ferries, unmade roads.
I once planned a trip to the pyrenees and couldn't get it to go over certain passes. It kept doubling back.
It took me a long time to realise that I had seasonal closures ticked, and although the trip was planned for summer, basecamp at the time used the computers date. When I was planning, it was winter.

Re: Issues..
you mentioned using the center of the road as your shaping point. Favor the outside edge of your travel lane. I have found that helps with the reversals.

Re: Issues..
It would be good to see the routes as you may have chosen "roads" that are actually single track roads that could well be gated at the end or no through road
There is plenty of roads like that here in the UK and especially in Scotland

Re: Issues..
I am back home after a hectic 3 days of driving to Minneapolis and back. Next week I’m going to try deleting the 2 separate days that are giving me problems and then re-creating them from scratch.
I’ll post the results..

Re: Issues..
Success…sort of.
I selected a route, then opened it, then selected the waypoints one by one. When I found a waypoint out of order, I moved it into it’s correct position using the arrows..then clicked on “recalculate”. I then moved on to the next waypoint until they were all in the correct order. Then I added some waypoints, generally after each intersection.
For some reason I ended up with a route being broken into separate routes instead of being combined into one route. I’ll figure out how to combine routes next.
