Via points set by rubber band

Post by Fxwheels »

When I pull the "rubber band" to reshape the route some points appear as via points. I have to go and set them as "don't alert", but if I forget, I get not needed via points in the nav.
Is there a way to know what point that it is setting when I'm shaping or reshaping the route?

Only way I know is to look in Route properties, I do it as part of my routine before sending a route to my Garmin.

I always put shaping points in junctions, and they don't seem to alert.

Drop a point between intersections and it will be assigned an address and made an alerting via point.

Drop a point at an intersection and it will be made a non-alerting shaping point.

I've learned that via points at intersections are not a good idea. They take priority over the turn instruction which may never be announced.

In addition, I have had a shaping point changed to a via point on the XT cause it to crash and reboot when I reached the intersection. So, I place shaping points only at intersections where I are sure I will NOT wish to turn. That preserves the option to make them via points at a later time.

I never place route points at intersections do to problems with them when I first started using Basecamp. My experience with the rubber band method is that Via points are created only when Basecamp can identify the route point with a physical address. Obviously that means that a Via point is created most of the time, but there are exceptions in rural areas or on brand new roads.

Been there, done that. I have become very diligent about my final steps in Basecamp being to check the precise location of every route point AND check/modify its alerting status.

Thanks for the replies. I understand that the only way to be sure is to check the Route properties before loading to the nav. Basecamp works in mysterious ways lol.

Oh, while at it, have you ever got a straight line after importing into the BC? Usually I am correcting it in the Route properties by moving 2 points around and x-out. Now it would follow the route (not always though), so I go there again and correct them back. But why it brings it as a straight line to begin with?

Perhaps the leading route point is assigned the "Direct" activity profile. Each route point can be assigned its own Activity Profile. When one is assigned the "Direct" activity profile, the leg from it to the next route point will be a straight line. This image shows where that option is.

Use the Recalculate button at the bottom of the Properties box if it initially shows straight lines.
