Fun with CNNA NT 2023.2!

Post by lkraus »

I updated my XT map last night (CNNA NT 2023.2), using Express 7.13.1.0 and a USB cable. The XT updated just fine but I struggled to get the map on the PC updated for Basecamp.

Express reported no errors, but with the new map selected in BC, only the basic global map was actually displayed. Second attempt to install on the PC also failed: BC now had the new map listed 3 times (with the XT unplugged) and none showed any detail. I uninstalled it from Windows Program Manager, verified it was gone from C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps. Basecamp was still showing one copy.???

Rebooted, re-ran Express and re-installed to the PC and the one copy listed actually worked!

It will be reassuring to know that my update to this map and the subsequent transfer to the PC went fine.
When I do any Garmin related installs or updates on my PC I do so with my user account temporarily elevated to administrator.

Just installed CNNA NT 2023.20 on my computer (MacBook) and my two Garmin (665 and 660). No issues but I have only looked at the maps on the GPS and have not used them for directions yet.

I thought I had this sorted last night, but this morning, with the XT connected I am again seeing three CNNT NA 2023.2 maps in Basecamp.
Without the XT connected, I see one.

The myMaps menu on the XT now has a one checkbox for "ALL US" and another for "ALL Canada & Mexico", instead of just one for all of North America. The choices in Basecamp don't mention Canada, US, or Mexico in the titles.

So, do I have two maps on the XT and one on the PC? Will the XT recalculate routes created in Basecamp since the maps are apparently different?

No time today to investigate further.

I'm getting very tired of dealing with Garmin's undocumented changes.

The new map can't be installed in one hit as it now breaks the FAT32 4GB limit, nothing to do with Garmin. Your PC can handle files larger than 4Gb so you'll have the map on your PC, and the 2 on your device, showing in BaseCamp. Those with the EU map have had the same for a few years ...

Thanks for that, it explains what I'm seeing. Nothing to do with Garmin? Yes, I think it is a Garmin issue for not supporting exFAT. exFAT has been available since 2006, and Garmin had to have seen the file size limit being an issue long before the XT was designed.

Me too. Does unticking a map in myMaps disable it or does it delete it? Maybe the more appropriate question is whether there is any reason to leave maps for Canada and Mexico enabled if I don't intend to ever ride there?

Unticking them doesn't remove them. You could of course delete the map file but little point in doing so.
