For all of the Zumos that I have at home, there is a pre-boot menu which you access by pressing a sequence of power button.

One of the options is to roll back the software to a previous version. But this is for the 590, 595, XT and XT2. The Pin facility i don't recall using on any of those, so I cannot say whether reinstalling system software would solve the PIN problem.

Nor do I know whether Garmin Express will re-install the software.

The 660 was a very different beast from the later models. I took very few notes on how the 660 behaved. Someone on here may know. I'll see if I can locate anything.

Edit....

The link below describes how to enter pre boot menu for various devices including the Zumo 660. It may also have other information.
But as I said, even if you can get back to a previous software version, there is no guarantee that it will reset the PIN. I simply do not know the answer to that

Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Thanks so much for your suggestion.

I tried the following, as per the website:
Models zumo: 660
1. Turn off the navigator.
2. Press the LOWER left corner of the screen .
3. Turn on the navigator still holding the lower left corner of the screen + power button.

All that did was recalibration, after chasing a button around the screen.

This is proving to be a curly one indeed.

I don't know if this will work but it costs nothing to try, back in the good old bad old days when crooks would steal car radios there was a trick of putting the radio in a freezer overnight that would clear the pin code. It might be worth a try.

Well gentlemen, the enigma has been solved!
The previous owner remembered changing the PIN code. It works with the updated code. Hooray.

Now it's time for a stiff drink

Strange as you said it worked previously with that PIN?

I don't think he said the PIN had worked for him, unless I read it wrong.

You're right. I had indeed used it once. But that was several months ago.
I stupidly didn't record the PIN at the time, thinking that I would remember it. A bad mistake!
So I had to ask him again recently. And that's when he gave me the wrong code initially.
But we got there in the end.
