Pairing XT with Packtalk Edge as GPS

I was wondering how the set up would perform if I paired the Zumo XT to the Cardo Packtalk Edge as a GPS instaed of as a phone.

Originally I had the XT paired as a phone which worked fine with the Packtalk Edge the only downside was the lack of the OK Google function, which in reality I probably wouldn't use. However my curiosity being what it is I had to try the alternative of pairing as a GPS.
I must say I think I prefer it to the original setup. Everything works including the OK Google if you want it.
The packtalk Edge becomes the central hub.
1. Pair the phone to the XT as normal to connect with Garmin Drive and then disable on the XT Media Audio
2. On the phone disable within bluetooth setting XT all options Calls, Audio, and Contact Sharing.
3. Pair the XT to the Edge as a GPS (see Edge user manual)
4. On the XT find the Edge setting and disable Media audio and leave the headphone connect ticked.

As an aside I have my phone set up to auto answer calls while a headset is connected.

I will give this set up a try for a while and I'll see how I get on with it. Of course if it doesn't suit you can always revert to the other set up.

The issue I run into using the phone as a music/entertainment source is that eventually something always needs a screen input, requiring a stop, removing gloves, digging the phone out of a pocket, etc.

So my music is on the microSD card. The drawback is no phone or music when the XT is left at home, without changing the pairing configuration.

To be honest I rarely if ever listen to music while riding, I tested it in the interests of being thorough. Also I must say the voice control of the Edge just works although I have been using the buttons just so I get used to it. I do have an SD card in the XT with routes and music if I want to listen to music from the XT.

How did this work out for you as I'm having a bit of trouble with the Edge randomly disconnecting from the XT.

@raesewell, I am curious about two things...
1. Apple or Android phone? @jfheath identified a capability on Android that is not on Apple. I don't remember the specifics.
2. Can you see texts on the XT with the XT not being the hub?

FWIW, I have a Packtalk Bold. Having the XT as the hub was the only way I got things to work acceptably well, but it regularly requires a little fussing to get it all working before a ride.

I use a Samsung Galaxy S23 so Android. I am not sure if texts come through on the XT or not, however the "OK Google" command works so you could get Google to read out the text if you so desire.
I find setting the XT as a GPS suits my needs perfectly.

Here are some notes that I prepared after finally getting my system set up. I jotted things down, wrote it up, and then reset everything back to initila state and followed my own notes. They are long winded (you come to expect that from me), but they are detailed and they work.

I use the Packtalk Edge Bold Duo - with pillion
Zumo XT
Samsung Galaxy phone.

I wanted trouble free connection to pillion - turn on and go. Which it does first time every time
Phone to XT
XT to headset

I keep the Edges 'first phone' free - not connected to anything. That make it easy to connect the phone to the edge in order to use the app, should I need to alter some of the settings that cannot be made on the Edge itself. That connection is always removed when I have finished.

The XT is paired as the second phone - to the Edge - not as a GPS. That is because the XT takes over all of the phones functions when it is paired.

The attached is step by step setting up the two edges to talk to each other and then getting the first Edge paired with the Zumo and phone. I do not use any voice commands to the phone. I'm not even sure if it is possible. I do know that if you put the Edge at the centre of the XT and phone, then it has issues with one part of the setup. Bu tit depends on what your priorities are.

Part of me thinks that voice commands should go through the XT to reach the phone - but for that, you need to disable the security on the phone and leave your phone open - so that it doesn't shut down. I decided that was a no-no and I have never tried it. The MP3 player on the XT is far superior than music passing through two BT connections.
