What ingenious way do you handle your XT when charging?

Post by Peobody »

I have commented about my warranty replacement XT in other posts. I was replaced due to a broken USB cord jack. I am really struggle with working with the XT while it is plugged in, overly concerned about any pressure on the cable breaking the jack. Normally when I am doing anything with it I am also in front of my PC transitioning between the XT and the keyboard/mouse so I can't just hold it. What do you do?

Part of the problem is that the battery discharges quickly requiring that it be plugged in. I don't recall my previous one discharging this fast. I have the brightness set at 100% which is only needed when riding so am wondering if there a way to adjust brightness on the fly (other than through Settings > Display)?

I get a good 5 to 6 hours out of my XT on battery so I don't plug it in :?

The battery is that good on a trip last year I kept losing power so I ran it on battery for 4 hours while navigating with no issues

I don't charge it, but use it connected via USB sometimes.

I let it rest on the cable. It acts as a little stand.
If you place it on a desk gently, there is no risk of damage.

I am not aware of anything that happened to mine that would explain the jack breakage but I could see that the nub inside the jack was physically loose. Hopefully it was just defective but I am really nervous that it doesn't take much to break it. The next time I have my saw out I'm going to cut a 4" long piece of 2x4 and set that next to my computer The XT will sit on it with the cord down insuring no stress on the cord.

That's kind of how I do mine. My desk has the rollout shelf for the keyboard so I put the XT on ths edge, cord down.

I have some small plastic trays with high sides. I rest it across one of those so that no weight is placed on the cable. Its not the cable or the connector that gets damaged, it is the track on the circuit board that eventually gives way (in experience with other devices).

I plug/unplug at the computer end when I am working with it, and have started to email routes to drive (when I remember), as it also avoids the issue with temp.gpx being overwritten after the USB cable is reconnected.

Today, I discovered something really important. I found another way that doesn't work.

If you use something like this, so that the cable isn't coming straight out from the back to reduce the loading on the XT's connector:

I rest mine against my PC, leaning it back slightly. No strain on the cable, which curls up to the PC's USB socket.
