Proximity Alerts

Regarding an audible warning to occur 0.5 miles in advance of this WayPoint (see attachment), I perform the following:
Settings
Driver Assistance
Proximity Alerts
Audio
Single Tone or Continuous Tone.
I tried Continuous Tone but one-half mile of tones was overkill.
I tried Single Tone, and I mean I really focused on hearing the single tone, but I never heard the tone.
I typically listen to music so I expected an interruption in my music in order to hear the Single Tone but to no avail.
Anyone have any advice for the successful use of Proximity Alerts.
I thank you in advance.
Cheers,
Keith

Hi,
How do you load this way point on the XT?
If you export from BaseCamp to GPX and just transfer that GPX, you will find it on the XT in Saved, or Favourites (Depending on the language) Then you will not get an alert.
To get alerts you must convert the GPX to a GPI file and load it on the XT. There is a Garmin program POIloader that can create and load the .GPI. But there are others, like TripManager, that can do it also. After succesful transfer you will find the converted waypoint on the XT under 'Categories' / 'Custom POIs'

When talking about continuous or single, keep in mind that a Garmin "Single Tone" is a double-bong (sounds like a double-ding to me). If you have an XT and ride in the U.S. then you likely frequently hear the double-bong proximity alert when you get near a school. That said, I don't listen to music so I can't help with whether they will interrupt it.
If you are trying to set proximity alerts for individual POI or Via points, a trip to consider is to create a Via point on the road at whatever distance you want from the point you want to be alerted about. For instance, if you want to be alerted about an Exxon when you are 1/2 mile away, place a Via point on the approach road 1/2 mile away from the Exxon, and give it a name like "Exxon 1/2 mile on right".

Thank you very much Peabody. The clue about the double-bong similar to school warnings is very helpful. I do hear the double-bong for schools.
After I wrote the original email I did happed upon a volume control for proximity and it was set at about 75% so I bumped it up to 100% then took the XT on a trial run in my car with no radio or extraneous noises to drown out the double-bong, but still to no avail. Maybe someone else has more clues.
Thank you again.
Cheers,
Keith

It seems I got off on the wrong foot, by your remark of the proximity.
A Basecamp Waypoint can eventually be found on the XT in at least 3 ways.
1) It can be converted to a POI and then you will see it under 'Categories' / 'Custom Pois'. ONLY then the proximity is used!
2) It can be stored under 'Saved' or 'Favourites'. Then it is NOT related to a route/trip, and you will NOT be alerted.
3) It can be part of a route/trip. It will alert only when it is marked as a Via point/Alert on Arrival in BC.

Are you talking about 3? Set it to 'Alert on arrival' on the route in BC, or change it to a 'Via point' in the 'Trip Planner' on the XT.
Notes :
- The proximity is not used.
- When changing a Via Point back to a Shaping point on the XT, it can get relocated.
Screenshots of the XT:
When you click on 'Where to' choose either 'Categories' for option 1, or 'Saved' for option 2.

When you open a trip on the XT, in the Trip Planner. You can see shaping points as blue dots, or via points as red flags. The blue dots will not alert you, the red flags will.

@jfheath has described this excellently.
