Delete old maps on 550

I use the cloning-method to update maps for Zumo 550 and it’s working fine. So my active maps are on the SD card and old out-dated maps are on 550. Periodically I will get a reminder on the 550 that my maps need to be updated. Should or could I delete the map files from the Zumo?

It's difficult to be sure, I've seen anecdotal statements that older devices have failed without a map on the device. The other possible danger with deleting it is that should the sd card pop out then your device would be useless, at least with another map on the device itself you can use that in the short term.

I have deleted my maps on the 550 and have them on the SD card only. Been like that for several years now and no problems.

That's good to know. In that case the way to delete the old map is to delete the gmapprom.img on the device as that is the map file, there may also be a gmapprom.unl and gmapprom.gma file, they can also be deleted.

Those are the 3 files I removed off my Zumo 550, after installing new maps on an SD card. Works fine this way.

Conversely, if there are two maps listed on the zumo, when viewing map info, you'll notice both are selected. You could simply deselect the older map and reboot the GPS.

The zumo 550 has 1.2GB internal memory, after removing the old map files(to my PC), there was only 59MB used(but I only had one voice installed and one vehicle icon as well).
