Version 6.60 fixes RUT?

Just saw a post on Facebook that suggests new firmware fixes RUT on imported routes in the XT2. For me (XT1) the big question is should I get an XT2 or will an update fix my zumo, or hold out for an XT3? Tough choices.

Yes, I know how to fix imported routes, but it is time consuming and I had one yesterday that took multiple tries before it worked properly.

I'd guess that the XT won't get it as they no longer sell them.

Hopefully they'll sort out the fastest roads problem this decade as well!

V6.60 for XT2 ?

We shall see what that holds in store as regards RUT behaviour.

I think that they had a go at it a while back - certainly behaviour changed in that when navigating, if a route demanded a U turn more than twice in succession, it stopped asking for them, but continued to try to turn you back in other ways. So the problem wasn’t cured, it was just hidden - which makes it worse.

I see that they mention repeated U turns on the XT2 update screen, but RUT was never about repeated U turns. That was just an unfortunate pun by me describing one of the symptoms. In fact the biggest most damning symptom is only visible if U turns are not allowed. That is for example - you deviate from the route, the Zumo asks you to turn back by taking a tour around a housing estate and leads you back in the opposite direction.

You ignore that and continue ahead. It tries again, this time taking you through a village that has been by-passed by the road that you are riding.

At that point, if you stop and wonder what it is doing, and assume it is trying to get you to the next route point, or trying to get you to the point where you deviate. So you look at the map. It isn’t doing either. The route back involves taking you through the bypassed village and then through the housing estate. The reason that it does that is because it has deleted the route behind you and plotted a new route back to where it last issued an instruction - which includes going back to the last point on the route and continuing from there. It doesn’t even bother to calculate any further than the last point - cos you can see all of the detours that it is going to take you on - the village, the estate etc.

It has no way that it can escape from this - the closest point on the route is the one it created to turn you back, and that is behind you.

It is stuck in a rut.

Except - if you continue towards a later part of the route and that becomes closer than the point behind, it will navigate forward.

Other symptoms apart from the route now containing all of the turn back loops…
You can tap skip to see the next route point on your route, and then dismiss it. In a RUT situation, the points are never removed from the list.
If you load in your automatic track log, you will find it is fragmented. The broken / missing sections coincide with the recalculation points.
If you get back on route and miss the instruction to visit a route point, the Zumo will remove it from the screen.

Coincidentally, I am out in the car tomorrow visiting a place where I carried out plenty of testing for RUT behaviour.

I’ll set up my XT2 a route, force it to trigger RUT behaviour, and then go off route. See what it does.

I’m not holding my breath - but I gave them all of the evidence that I had collected with the XT1. The XT2 had the same problem and I am told that the XT3 has as well - but I don’t know if it shows all of the above symptoms.

Thank you for testing the new version 6.60. I think the Garmin technicians have taken your experience and tried to resolve the issue... let's hope we haven't caused any further problems...
