New to the XT2 - OSM Mapping

Post by Jimbrougham »

In the UK, is there any benefit installing the OSM maps onto the SD card, I dont think they have speed limit markers or do they? any newbie help appreciated. Will be using it on my Honda Goldwing so tarmac routes only

In Europe in general, and presumably in the UK as well, Garmin’s own City Navigator maps will certainly be more than sufficient for the routes you take on your Goldwing.

In any case, you are free to install the OSM maps also as an additional option, even it won’t be necessary, and, if needed, select which one you want to use in the navigation system.

That’s my two cents for now, from a German perspective and the UK guys may will likely confirm this ;-)

PS
If you have OSM Maps also and use tracks, then you can (if nothing better is available) also use the Zumo XT2 for your bicycle route ;-)

OSM maps work well and have a lot of additional mapped information. I quite like them, but I don’t use them very frequently.

The do not have road speed limit info, which isn’t a problem for me - I use the road marking and signs, not the map. But because they don’t have the speed limits, the ETA values / timings for the route are far too optimistic.

If you select Garmin maps AND OSM maps at the same time in MyMaps, the route calculation will be very agricultural. It ignores the roads.
If you select OSM, then deslect the eg CN Europe NTU maps and vice versa. Other mapping data can remain selected. eg TopoActive, DEM as they d not affect navigation, they just provide additional detail - eg DEM is the digital elevation data. Not sure whether topactive provides navigable maps or not.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !
