Sd card not showing up on my XT2 unit

Post by Peet »

Good day, is the sd card supposed to be visible in the Zumo unit. I format the card to FAT32, but inserting the card, doesn’t show up. But connecting the unit to Basecamp, I can see the sd memory card, also creating tracks on the sd card in a card reader, and inserting the card, the Zumo ask to import the gpx file. City navigator and Southern Africa maps is not visible in the unit, but is loaded as I can navigate using the Zumo

The sd card does not show up as a drive on the zumo as it would on a pc. If it offered to import the gpx file, then the zumo is seeing the card.

On the zumo, you import from and / or export to the memory card.

I can add to @smfollen’s reply.

The SD card on the XT2 is scanned for various types of file automatically by different parts of the system. This includes:-
  • Mp3 music files
  • Maps
  • Gpx files
Rather than requiring Gpx and mp3 files to be in a specific folder, it seems that it finds them anywhere - it appears to perform a full traverse of the folder tree in internal storage and on the SD card, including subfolders.

The mp3 and gpx folders are the traditional locations for music and gpx files respectively, but that seems not to be a requirement on the XT2. It seems that they can be saved anywhere.

When importing data from gpx files, the XT2 screen shows what type of data it has found (routes, tracks, waypoints ) and gives the full pathnames of the files that it has located. There is a limit to the number of characters that it can show, so it makes sense to keep file and folder names

Waypoints and tracks are imported automatically from files placed in internal storage when the XT2 is booted after data transfer. In the case of tracks, they are then removed from the gpx file, so they cannot be imported again. None of this happens with files placed on the SD card - routes, tracks and waypoints have to be imported manually, and the files remain unaltered.

(I have a sneaking suspicion that mp3 files are deleted from internal storage if the XT2 is asked to perform a full system reset. But I have only just noticed this and haven’t tested my suspicion).

There is an option to share data / routes using the SD card. I have never found this to be a reliable method on earlier Zumos, but have not tested it on the XT2.

Loaded maps are shown in the MyMaps sub menu (Settings -> Map Display -> MyMaps) . They can be selected or de-selected in that menu.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !
