here is what I did.
- connected Zumo 396 via usb to my Computer (Windows 11 PC)
- Opened Garmin Express using 7.24.0.0 version, its an older version that still works ok
- Garmin Express sees my Zumo 396 that already has 2022.20 CNNA maps in Internal memory
- clicked on View Details for new Maps to Install in Express
- Express says new CNNA 2026.30 maps available
- in Express, selected Install all 2026.30 maps to PC COMPUTER ONLY
- maps install completed on PC
- Create a new folder on SD card thats in the 396 and name it Garmin
- copy/paste the GarminDevice.xml map license file from the Garmin folder 396 internal memory to the a new Garmin folder (create it) on the SD card
- ended the Garmin Express program and disconnected the 396 from computer
- remove the microSD card from the 396 unit
- started up Basecamp program to confirm that the 2026.30 maps just dowloaded are on the computer
- all ok so far
- started up the garmin MapInstall program on my computer
- insert the microSD card into a usb card reader
- connected card reader to the computer via usb
- on MapInstall, click on Find Device (MapInstall should see and find that sd card on the card reader thinking that it's the 396 unit
(the 396 unit is not connected to the computer, only the sd card reader with the GarminDevice.xml license file on the sd card)
- MapInstall found the Zumo unit, actually the 396 saw the SD card with the .xml file on the card thinking the card was the 396 unit
(tricking MapInstall here to force MapInstall to install maps on the card and not in 396 unit Internal memory)
(be aware that if the 396 unit is connected when running MapInstall, then MapInstall program will give you no option to install any maps just on the sd card)
- here is where you look on MapInstall to see all of the 2026.30 CNNA maps is available, but I don't want to install all of North America on the card, just selected areas.
- click the Continue button then the Select button to continue
- on MapInstall, begin clicking on those map areas you want to install on the card
- I selected 14 maps all of East Coast Canada 274 MB total data
- click Continue to next screen
- on MapInstall click on Install
- I used windows file explore to view the sd card,
- in Garmin folder on the sd card, 2 new files with endings (.gma) and (.img) added by MapInstall
- removed card reader from my computer and removed the card
- ended the MapInstall program
- installed microSD (32GB) into the 396 unit
- connected 396 unit to the computer
- with 396 unit disconnected from computer, check 396 settings
- looked under myMAPS, and saw a new map available and checked the box
actually it was already checked, I just unchecked the other maps CNNA and Foursquare, don't need to see those now
- all worked out well, project completed
to see the map files under /.System folder on the 396 unit, you will need to press and hold the Speed icon on the 396 for 10 seconds to force the 396 to enter developers mode, in there you click on the box for Mass Storage, Mass Storage allows you to view hidden system files
