Displaying Track and Route at the same time.

@Sean OZ Asked a question on the Facebook pages. I sometimes call in on there and 'rescue' the poor souls who are being confused by a wealth of different, incorrect or irrelevant answers.
Rather than write more essays on FB, I've diverted the discussion to these pages.
Changing a copy of a theme file to display a wider track.

Note that this works best if the general track width is set to medium (this setting also affect the width of the route).
That setting can be made in Apps->Tracks->Select any track->Spanner->Track Width
To make the track and route appear on the same screen - on the XT2 (also applies to the XT1 with Explore enabled)
Create a collection for one particular day out.
Assign any route, track and any waypoints to that collection.
In the collections menu, turn off visibility of all collections except the one that you want to see.
Apps->Tracks->Select any track->Spanner->Set Colour, you can set the colour for the track. Black, Red, Blue work well.
Preventing RUT Behaviour on the XT2
Load the Route.
Click the Spanner on the route map, left side.
Select Copy
Name the copy. I use the same name with a '@' in front.
Load and run the @Copy Version.
Press skip to your hearts content - you will not get it to get stuck in a RUT situation.
For XT1 users looking in - there is no copy command, so you have to start the route by pressing Go!
Select the start point, and then select Start
Immediately go back to the main page with the route still running
Select: Apps->Trip Planner->Saved Trips->My Active Route->Save. Give it a new name - eg use the @symbol to distinguish it from the original.
Done.
Now stop the route and load the new copy.
You will note that it has a new point at the start - that is where you are now. So when you start the route, choose the original start point, not this new point. The original start will be the entry after Closest Entry Point in the list. This means that you cannot perform this trick for a route in (say) European Alps when you are still in the USA - because it will have to calculate the route from the USA to the Alps. So - either simulate your current position to be in the Alps, or wait until you are near the start point (eg the night before) before you make the copy.
Again - the copied route will never develop the RUT behaviour. No matter how hard you try.

Sean Oz on FB wrote:As always, another excellent explanation from you. Thanks John. It's "frustrating" that both the xt2 and xt1 behave in such unexpected ways when using the skip function, which can then inadvertently lead to what you have called RUT behaviour. As you mentioned "If you have to,(use the skip function) then stop and reload the route and select CEP" and then confirm what the plotted route/track looks like on the preview screen before continuing. I absolutely agree it's a good idea to have both the Track and the route displayed on the screen at the same time. I need to re-learn how to do that and how to widen the track width. Would you perhaps have link(s) to the Zumo Forum article that shows how to do it? It's such a long time ago since I read how to do it on the Garmin Forum, and not even sure what serch term I would need to use on the forum pages, to re-find the information. Thanks heaps again
