Missing POI Symbols in Map View

Post by rdrincalgary »

I recently bought a Zumo XT2 after years of using Garmin's smaller hand held units (GPSMap 66i was most recent) and Garmin/third party phone based GPS software on my adventure bike. So I am reasonably familiar with Garmin's software (online and on-unit), including basecamp and explorer, but new to the tread app. And, I'm also familiar with some of the (usually) minor annoyances and idiosyncrasies of Garmin products and have learned to live with them.

My overall initial impression of the XT2 is positive. However, I'm having an issue with many of the symbols/icons in the map view on the XT2 showing up only as small white boxes with blue text that reads "image not found". The number of missing symbols varies, and seems to depend on what the "map detail" setting is on, how many layers are showing, etc. - basically, it seems like the more information the map is showing, the more of these symbols are shown as "image not found". I've attached screenshots of a couple of examples: Example 1 is what I see when I turn off most of the layers, Example 2 is a more extreme case with most of the layers turned on.

I searched this forum and others for help, and only found a couple of postings for "lost icons", but this seemed to be related to user-defined POI symbols, not to the POIs in the Garmin-supplied maps. I contacted Garmin's help line through chat, thinking there might be some sort of software fix, but they indicated simply that there was no known solution to the issue. When I asked if this was a common problem and if a fix was in the works, they didn't really offer much. However, they very quickly offered to send me a new unit and suggested that would likely resolve the issue.

A week later I had a new unit in my hands, but unfortunately am having the same issue. Before I call Garmin again, I wanted to reach out to the forum members to see if this is a fairly widely known issue, if there are any workarounds (other than just stripping down the number of layers, amount of detail, etc. in the map view - which would seem to defeat the purpose of having all that information available in the first place), and if anyone has heard anything different from Garmin than the answer I received.

It would even just be helpful to know if this is common, and another one of those imperfections that plague Garmin software that we've all learned to live with because overall, the units are very good.

Thanks in advance,
Rick

Hi and welcome.

This happened with the last software update, and reports / complaints have been lodged.

Past experience shows that Garmin seem to care little about such issues when commented on by a few users. Often is diffcicult to pin it down to one particular software upgrade, but I happened to have proof that it worked on the previous version of the software - but I rolled my software back to the previous version and POIs showed on screen. With v6.10 everything else works - sound plays when the perimeter is reached, picture files are displayed at the same time, the caption at the top of the screen changes - but the icons are no longer displayed on the screen.

So yes - we know about it. Garmin have yet to produce a solution. Please complain to product support. If they say that they do not know about it, then quote case reference number RE: << Ref:30458259K1 >> Re: XT2 V6.10 Software Custom POIs behaviour has changed <Q#:1000051>
Lodged with them on 29 June 2025.

I find it more productive to phone up -otherwise you get an email response that contains all sorts of links most of which are irrelevant.
On the phone you can say no - I have POI files. They worked on the XT1 (or whatever) and I am informed that POI files worked OK on earlier versions of the software. They stopped working with v 6.10. We suspect that speed cameras also stopped working at the same time.

The previous version was I believe 6.00. When I rolled the software back it reverted to version 5.40

This was a couple of screen images that I sent to them. Same gpi file. Same location. v5.40 software shows the POI location, v6.10 of software does not.

Neither does it show up on the information screen when looking at individual POIs.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Hello jfheath!

Thank you for your reply, it was very helpful.

Following your prompt, I did a software roll back on the XT2 and this appears to have addressed the problem of the missing POI icons. In my case, the roll back was from Version 6.10 to 4.70 (unfortunately it seems to roll back to whatever version is built into the unit, as it didn't roll back to 5.40 as had been your experience).

I did contact Garmin US customer support this morning about my issue. Like in your experience, they didn't have an immediate solution - he did ask if I had loaded any custom POIs. I haven't loaded any of my own POIs, but I do use a third party mapset (Backroads Mapbooks, or BRMB) which is Canadian based. The issues I have experienced have been with both the BRMB POIs but also the Garmin POIs in their TopoActive Maps. The fact that he asked about custom POIs makes me think they are aware and are likely working on a solution, although in my case it was Garmin and BRMB POIs that were the problem, not custom user POIs.

I sent an update in the email I received from Garmin with the results of my software roll back, and also referenced the case number you provided below. I also suggested the issue seems to be with Version 6.10 of the software as you (and probably other users) had done. I'll post an update here if I hear anything useful back from Garmin.

In the meantime, I guess I won't do the update from Version 4.7 to 6.10, and wait to see if a patch to 6.10 is issued.

Rick.

Hello,
More people have reported this problem to Garmin.
I myself reported it a month ago and they said (as almost always) that they had no knowledge of it and that is false, a colleague of mine had already reported it to Garmin.
They asked me for a .gpi file as well as other information and opened the incident to see if it could be solved.
On 30 July I asked for information about the situation and they replied that they were still working on it, I really have the impression that they are not very interested but it is an inconvenience (at least for me).
What is left is to see if they solve it in an update, however today I got a map update.
Best regards,
