Welcome to the forum

I remember all too clearly my first introduction to the Zumo 590. I had previously owned a Zumo 550 and then a Zumo 660 - which I loved. At the time we were told that we should be using Basecamp and not Mapsource - but then Garmin changed their minds when they started to develop Basecamp to cater for the new devices that had the Trip Planner App - the Zumo 590 at the time, but also the 595 XT and XT2
I hated the 590 and was all for chucking it at the wall. Garmin's documentation was poor for what I was expecting. Having hated BAsecamp in its first incarnation, it was greatly improved for the arrival of the 590. But the Zumo came with poor documentation.
So I buckled down and wrote a document. It was aimed at the 590 and Basecamp but much of it still applies to the later 595, XT and now the XT2.
It details the basic components of a route - the stuff that you have to know before any of what BAsecamp does can possibly make sense.
You have to forget how you prepared routes for your Zumo 665 with Mapsource and recognise that routes for the 590, 595, XT1 and XT2 are different.
The document can be downloaded from the first post in this thread:

The first two sections are still relevant for the XT2. Most of the third section applies, but the location of the various features is different on the XT2.
At the end of section 3 (P28) there is a link to a play list where I use Basecamp to put together a route for the 590. I still use the same technique for my XT2. This has about 12 videos which go through each stage of creating a route using Basecamp.
The link below is to a later set of videos where I attempted to cover the same BC basics in just 5 videos - and keeping each one to less than 3 minutes - and is probably better at giving an overview of using BC for the XT2.

The New England Rider document is good - but different people learn in different ways and for me, it doesn't help me to learn. I tried it, but it only made sense to me once I had already found out !! Other people find it extrememly useful.
But before you can learn anything - you need to get rid of what you know from MapSource - and the pdf file from the first link above will give you that background information.
Basecamp reports incompatability issues with the XT2. That is true - but that is only because the XT2 has features that Basecamp cannot possibly know about - eg 4 levels of adventurous routing, Moto popular routes, Michelin Scenic Roads. For creating a route that can be sent to the Zumo, I still regard it as the best tool. I always use Basecamp to create gpx files of my routes to send to the XT2.
In my opinion - the XT2 works best WITHOUT Tread being fully installed. I have Tread running on my phone, but I have not allowed the XT2 to store data or to synchronise. That gives me access to traffic and weather data and up ahead places, like fuel, cafes while on the move.
If you have already set it up, then to remove it you have to perform a system reset of the XT2 and uninstall Tread from your phone. You can then pair them again - but do not be tempted to store data or synchronise. You get the option AFTER you have signed into your Garmin Account.
The XT2 (and the XT and 595) have a few routing issues which can be easily resolved. But that is for later.
I am referring to making a copy of the route using the XT2 screen and navigating using that
Or - using TripManager to transfer the route to the XT2
Simple solution, dramatic improvement in routing behaviour.
