Topo maps US to Australia

Post by dp3000 »

Hello,

I have just found and joined the group after searching for a solution to a problem I have run into with my XT2.

I purchased my XT2 earlier this year in the US while living there. I have just returned to Australia and went on the Garmin website to purchase an Australian map and bought the CN map, $189. At the time I didn't know it didn't come with the topographical map.

After realizing when using the XT2 off-road that a lot of smaller roads weren't showing on the map and there was also no terrain shading I realized the topo map was missing.

I contacted Garmin Australia who explained that the topo map can't be purchased and comes built in to the Australian units. They suggested I purchase a third part topo map. So I'm now looking at spending another $200 with companies like GPSOZ or Johnny Appleseed.

My issue is that neither company can tell me how well their maps will work with the XT2 and whether or not terrain shading will work. I know this is not a common question but I'm looking for any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Can't answer the topo map issue but also note you won't be able to update the CN map as it's a one off purchase, unlike the NA map that came with your Zumo.

Not according to Garmin, buying supplementary maps have always been a one off purchase. This from their Ts&Cs

Download Requirements
Use with 1 Device Only
This product may be unlocked and used on 1 compatible device. If you want to use this same map on subsequent devices, you must purchase a new map for each device.

Data downloaded to a microSD/SD card is associated with the device you select during the download process. Please purchase additional quantities for additional devices. Reduced price map updates are not available for download purchases. If you want to update the maps, you must purchase a new download that includes the latest map data.

Garmin has an AU topo map on microSD, but the XT2 is not on the compatible list.

See if there is a suitable topo map at GPSFileDepot.

If you can still return the Garmin CN map, you might also look at the free OSM map at openmapchest.org. Free if downloaded with a torrent client, it is fully routable, updated weekly and is a good option for street use.

Quick update. I downloaded the Australian openmapchest.org map and it seems to work OK from a quick bench test. Will be using the XT2 over the weekend and will test further.

I will also be downloading the GPSFileDepot topo map and testing that.

Update - Both the openmapchest.org map and GPSFileDepot topo map work well with the XT2. If you are travelling to Australia don't bother buying the CN map from Garmin, just use these two.
