Is there a way to delete XT screenshot files from within the XT, or can that only be done with a file explorer?

No, as far as i know only possible via a file explorer - 'normal' full reset also does not delete them! Maybe the only solution to do this without a file explorer is a via flashing the firmware with the hidden start-up menu, but i can't say for sure as i've never used this...
