Acquiring Satellites issue

Post by Iantigerman »

Hi.
Recently replaced my 395 LM for a new XT as I wanted features such as weather and road updates.

The unit is wired into a Thunderbox connector along with my other accessories, and as the engine is started and the battery has been checked by the Thunderbox, the sat nav, auxiliary lights and cameras all switch on - just as they should.

However, after the XT powers up, it displays ‘Acquiring Satellites’ and stays that way (even after a 30 mile ride!) until I disconnect the unit from the cradle, and then connect it again.

Whilst not a major issue, this is becoming a nuisance.

I also agree with others that the satellite connections are way inferior to the 395… I was on a route and the XT (correctly) told me to take the next right turn. As soon as I did, it started telling me to make a U turn and then turn left despite the planned route showing I was on the correct road. Most annoying.

Thinking of returning the device and staying with the 395. At the price of the XT, I expect much better...

I will venture to say that you unit is faulty. I've never had this problem and it even awuires satellites indoors. I've never had the dreaded U-Turn problem either.

Thanks MotoToph, Just what I didn’t want to hear!!! :(

I believe the U-turn issue is switchable in the Avoid options in Navigation app.

OK. Switched U-Turn to Avoid, hopefully that will solve that issue.

Garmin have been very helpful. They suggest that the White wire, normally not connected and is for Auto-Mode, should be connected to +12v which makes it Ignition controlled mode.

Will report back...

I believe the "dreaded U-Turn problem" referred to by @MotoToph is what has become known here as "RUT" (Repeated U-Turn). Setting the XT to avoid u-turns will not solve this problem. If you happen to get into a RUT, and u-turns are avoided, the XT will then seek out other ways to turn you around, like routing you around a block, through a neighborhood, or to a parallel street in the opposite direction. RUT is not common, requiring just the right combination of shaping point, via point, and skipped point.

Oh. Is there some kind of fix for this ‘RUT’?
If not, is it worth exchanging the XT for another one?

Thanks

@Iantigerman, this RUT issue it a serious rabbit hole. First you'll need to understand what happens and why, then you'll need to understand the different workaround options and the effort required of each. Finally you'll need to decide if the effort is worth it because if you should get caught in a RUT behavior, stopping and restarting the route can be the easiest solution.
The RUT problem is inherent in the recalculating algorithm of the XT and XT2. A new device won't prevent it.

To understand RUT, this is one place to start: https://www.zumouserforums.co.uk/viewt ... RUT#p17876. Search of the XT forum for "RUT" will produce many hits hence my "rabbit hole" reference.

Edit: Let me reword that. If you get caught in RUT behavior, stopping and restarting the route is the only solution. The question is whether the effort involved in preventing RUT is worth it you. Probably not today since you haven't experienced it.

Oh, that is not good!

Reading the link, I am impressed by all the hard work going on here - thank you. Very unimpressed with Garmin however.

I haven’t used any downloaded routes on the unit yet - just simple type in a destination and go. In saying that, the unit seemed tobehave itself having placed U-Turns in theAvoid section.

I will be testing thismore fully as time passes but any support, poll, mob handed complaints to Garmin, count me in.

The old 395 never had any issue like this...
