XT routing offroad despite avoidances

Post by er-minio »

Hi all, apologies in advance for the "sparse" post, but I'm currently traveling on the bike and had no opportunity to take screenshots or "proofs".

In short: my Zumo XT is mostly forcing to route me through unpaved/very minor roads through illogical/longer routes despite its settings.
The XT is currently set as:

Routing Calculation = faster time
Avoidances = Avoid unpaved roads, allow everything else.

First couple of days of travel, from the hotel to the beginning of the routes I plotted it constantly tried to route us through single track lanes or lanes accessing farm fields. I assumed a mapping error.

Today, in bad weather, I pointed the Zumo to the hotel directly. No routes involved, just A to B navigation.
Route preview looked ok: some motorway and then smaller roads all the way to the hotel. But while on the motorway it must have recalculated the route (no idea why) as at some point the person traveling with me made me notice that I skipped the exit (his Zumo was too navigating towards the hotel and was still giving correct directions). When I checked the route overview, it had changed to something at least 4 times longer than the initial route, going through a very complex set of minor roads.
I stopped navigation, re-started (again pointing to the hotel address/waypoint) and it worked correctly.

I updated maps and software last week (I'll check software version tomorrow).
My friend's XT probably hasn't been updated in a while.

Fairly unreliable as it is (unless it's following my shaping point-rich routes). Is there any known bugs in recent updates by any chance?

As usual, thanks again in advance.

I would look at the routable maps that are checked in 'MyMaps'.
Keep City Navigator checked. Uncheck others like Topo, or OSM.

I unchecked the Garmin topo maps, even though these are normally always checked alongside the CN ones.

I also have an OSM-based map (of the UK) in there, but it was already unchecked and it’s also non routable.

I keep a TopoActive map checked for the area in which I ride. I doesn't appear to create any problem with routing.

As for unpaved roads, I find the XT terrible at identifying them resulting in routing over them even with that avoidance enabled. I assume the map is at fault. Maybe not???

European CN is quite good at identifying unpaved

We are talking single tracks/green lanes in a couple of cases, so I’d be confident the mapping should have indicated them as such.

If you haven't tried it, switch to driving mode. I used this exclusively until I figured out the quirks of the XT.
