Firmware for Group Ride Radio?

Post by Peobody »

I have received a notification from the Drive app of a firmware update available for my XT. I then checked it with Express which says it is "Firmware for Group Ride Radio". I don't have a clue what "Group Ride Radio" is nor can I find any reference to it in the manual. Please share what you know.

If you don't know what it is, you don't need the update. It's an expensive way for a group of riders to communicate and share location. Each of them needs a compatible Garmin GPS and the Radio accessory. I've never heard of anyone who actually uses it.

I just installed it, not because I have any use for it, but because I was tired of getting nagged on my XT, iPhone and Apple Watch with numerous alerts that "new firmware" was available. Takes less than 2 seconds to install and doesn't seem to have broken anything. Yet. ;-)

It looks like something that would be valuable to tour services who provide the bike, and maybe to group trainers. The $349.99 price tag was a shock.
