Re: Load the GPX files into Base Camp

Post by Peobody »

I say yes to having maps. It has been over 20 years since I have been out there but back then there was a lot of open space once you got out of Las Vegas. I suspect that Vegas is a lot bigger now but I don't think much will have changed once out. I have only driven, never ridden. Highlights for me were Death Valley, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Hoover Dam, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Grand Canyon. I am envious of your ride.

As for the GPX file, the XT will likely recalculate the route if the GPX files is loaded directly to it. That might be ok if the GPX file only contains POI points and not route points to control the roads to be traveled on. IMHO, if you are experienced with BaseCamp and the XT then load it into BaseCamp and recalculate it. Compare the result to the intended route (maybe create a track first before recalculating?). If the recalc changes it you can fix it before transferring it to the XT.

I'm a little confused, as your profile is showing the U.S. flag, but I guess that really does not matter.

Before purchasing a map I would look at the free OpenStreetMaps available from https://www.openmapchest.org/, which will work in Basecamp and on the XT. Instructions are available at the top of the openchest.org page. These maps are updated weekly and include searchable POI. They are probably the easiest OSM maps to download and install, but there are links to other sources at https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM ... n/Download.

Hopefully, your friend supplied tracks as well as routes in the GPX files, so you can see if recalculations caused by different maps, avoidances, or GPS routing algorithms have changed the routes. Load your GPX files in Basecamp, recalculate using the OSM maps and compare the routes to the tracks. I think these maps will work well, especially since you will be mostly following a group.
