I remember that at one time the option to save the map to the hard-drive disappeared, and re-appeared with an update. For those interested in 'hacking', it had something to do with the 'device.xml'. Another option I can think of is lack of free space on your hard-drive.
Or it's just one of those things that we will never be able to tell.
