Route options like Interstate

In Basecamp's Options -> Routing a number of road types can be selected or unselected.

I'd like to understand which of those road types exist on the European maps.

For example, are there any "Interstate" roads or "State Highways" in EU?
I cannot seem to find a way to see on a highway, if it's of this or that type.

Unfortunately it's not clear how those classifications translate to European roads but as they don't transfer in any case to your device I wouldn't worry.

The best thing to do is to have all of your avoidances turned off in Basecamp, and use shaping points to ensure that your route uses the roads that you want to ride. That way, if you Zumo ever needs to recalculate a route, it is more likely to follow the roads that you intended.

I sometimes use the custom 'profile' for a route in Basecamp. This sets avoidances and preferences for just the current route. It allows you to experiment by changing avoidances and preference - but unlike with other profiles, it does it as soon as you tick a box. It makes it very easy to see where you might need additional route points. When I have finished, I change the route to use the motorcycle profile. ready to transfer to the Zumo, although it doesn't matter if I don't.

Yes, absolutely, but I thought it was nice to know how to avoid the European highways, so I did a bit of testing. I will of course share my conclusions.

Avoidance of european highways/motorways can be done in Basecamp, by Route Options -> Road Type Avoidances:
Select Interstates and Major Highways

I also realized that avoid means "as far as possible" (not really a surprise, hah? 8-) ). So, if the only way from A to B is using a highway, then Basecamp will disregard the avoidance preferences (as a last resort), and calculate a route on the highway.

Yes, you can do that - but what you set in Basecamp isn't sent to the Zumo. Te route that BAsecamp produces as a result of avoiding highways will be preserved (assuming that the maps are the same), but if the Zumo recalculates the route for any reason, it doesn't know that you set 'avoid highways' to create it. You have to set something similar on the Zumo to get anywhere close. Or turn auto recalculation off. But even then, there are some odd circumstances when the route will still be recalculated.
