590 Rubber Power Button Failed

The rubber power button on my 590LM has shifted out of position and won't stay in place. It appears that there may have been an O-Ring around the top of the button that has worked loose.

I know that I can ship the GPS to Palm Dr and he will fix it. Has anyone else had this happen and is there a fix that can be done by the owner? Are these buttons available for sale? And, if they are, does a new one just get pressed into the cavity?

I sent a repair inquiry to Chris Short at Short Tronics (aka Palm Dr). He replied promptly this morning.

He explained that the power button is actually part of the rubberized "skin" on the back of the 590. It ages and dries, then cracks and breaks off. I could possibly have cobbled something together, but decided to get it repaired professionally. I have never been disappointed with Palm Dr repairs to any of my Garmins.

I had this problem a couple years ago. The design and drying of the rubber was probably part of the cause, but I think I aggravated the problem by using a fingernail to press the button. I remember that I found a part number for a replacement back, but never found a source for the part. I finally took off the back and sealed it with a thick application of black silicone gasket sealer from the inside. I allowed a full day for it to set up before reassembly. So far, no leaks and the button is still working properly. I now make it a point to only press with the pad of my finger and not the nail.

Sorry, I should have posted a final update to this post. I had the power button repaired by Palm Dr. last June/July 2021. With return shipping the repair was about $60. Well worth it. The repaired area is in better condition than new. He applied urethane behind the button and there is more material at the button than when it was new. At least initially, the button action was stiff, but I don't notice it anymore.

This topic is over a year old. The 590 power button was repaired by PalmDR for a reasonable cost last year. Device is working perfectly. I posted an update back in February stating that the repair was completed. Perhaps someone else will find this helpful.

It's been three years or so since I had my 590 apart and I'm not sure about all the details. I think it was just a matter of removing every screw I could find. I have a faded memory of an issue with tight clearances when reconnecting the screen (or was that another device?)

I do find it interesting that the vendor on Gumtree is using my picture from my earlier post!

I saved that link for when my button inevitably failed, and now it has, but the Gumtree listing is no longer there! :-( Anyone know any contact details for the seller?
