Thanks for the help John, lkraus, that has worked fine. I now have two units running the 595 version.

Well done ! It is quite daunting the first time that you do it, isn't it ? Make sure you know which one was the original 590 - in case you ever wish to restore it - because you cannot use this procedure to change an original 595 to a 590.

Just curious - Do you have the option to change the screen orientation on your 590 that is now a 595 ?

Only just got chance to check this - no, I don't have the option to change the screen orientation.
Also, the converted 590 does not get the "proximity alerts" that I have on the original 595.

Thanks for that. I think that must be a hardware issue. I got a 595 and wondered if it would take the 590 software - it does, but it doesn't work ! When I put it back to a 595 - it was now called Zumo, not Zumo 595. And the screen orientation worked.

Proximity alerts - do you mean for Via Points , or do you mean those assigned to Garmin's POI files - that play your own sound when you get within the specified distance whether or not you have a route running ?

I never checked for that when I was using my 590 converted to a 595 on a regular basis. But normal alerts were definitely there.
