Just updated my Tread to 2.12.40 and noticed that it updated the Map Library Version to 2.2.2-rc.2-SNAPSHOT at the same time.

@Lanso

We have wandered away from the concerns that you were describing regarding altered routes.

The bottom line for point to point routing seems to be for many people that the Tread App isn’t worth using in its present state. But that doesn’t make the XT2 useless. For many years the main way of getting routes into the Zumos -550, 660, 590, 595, XT - was by using a gpx file and transferring it by usb cable.

It is the combination of gpx files WITH Tread on the XT2 and Drive on the XT1 that makes the routing alter.

If you don’t allow the XT2 to synchronise with Tread, then many problems disappear, and you can perform a simple copy of the imported route on the XT2 screen to prevent the weird routing behaviour that can ruin a completely good route. (Rut behaviour).

That doesn’t prevent route points from being renamed and relocated though.

A better method is to keep the gpx file on your computer, and not let the XT2 see it. What normally happens is that the Xt2 processes the gpx file and tidies it up. It removes your tracks, it renames your route points, and often relocates shaping point so that they often end up on roads that you were trying to avoid. It builds up a .trip file with the altered data. This is placed in the hidden system folder and the XT2 uses that when it loads up your route. Too late, the damage has already been done while it was creating the .trip file.

@FrankB ’s Trip Manager is a windows based program. It does a lot of things but at a very basic level it prevents all of the above issues….
It reads your gpx file and builds it’s own trip file and gives it a sensible name.
It creates all of the route points - shaping and via - with exactly the name you gave and it maintains the position as you plotted them.
It creates all of the saved Waypoints that you created.

It will build a track of your route

It sets the status of the route to be ‘saved’ rather than imported. ‘Saved’ routes never suffer from Rut behaviour.

And there are all sorts of other useful tools in there as well.

It then saves this trip file with a name that you can recognise.

When you disconnect the usb cable and the Zumo starts up again, there is no need to import gpx files, the routes, tracks and waypoint are already available in the menus.

I know exactly how to make the XT1 and XT2 go wrong and can distinguish between user error and Zumo error.

So it was no surprise when Frank wanted me to see if TripManager behaved when the new .trip files had been created.

I’ve been out of action for 4 months, bike has been busy blowing front fork seals and rusting its brake lines. But before that I used all of my favourite test routes and I was unable to make the XT1 or the XT2 fail, following the same routes and doing the same things where the normally imported gpx files would fail.

Up until the point where my bike bit back putting it on its centre stand, I have been unable to get it to go wrong.

I have considered the Zumo 590 as being the most predictable and reliable navigation tool that Garmin have ever produced. After the 590, little oddities and features started to creep in and most have been passed on to later models.

I still have and still fire up my 590, 595, XT1 and XT2. With Trip Manager, the XT2 is the one that I choose to rely on.

If you need help starting to love it, then let us help you get to the same stage. You will have reserved a lot of choice expletives especially for describing Garmin and XT2. TripManager takes all of that angst away.

We had an exchange on FB. PM me on here if you wish to start the ball rolling, or post on here - I can make it into a new thread to keep it all together.

As for the display of POI icons, it's perfect.
Are there any other new features in this update?

The behaviour is slightly different from before - the POIs don’t show on the map until the perimeter is breached.

Based an a not very scientific test of 3 points created as a tour guide with pictures, voice recording and home made icons.
It’s probably different for simple POIs. I’ve yet to try that.

This may be due to setting a perimeter. But it is good to have them back again. I think that is the first time I have reported anything, and it has been fixed.

Just curious. Did they give you more info? (You being the reporter)

One thing I noticed on a very short trip was that the behaviour at roundabouts seems to be "laggy". That is, the vehicle position icon lags the actual position on the road by some amount. This may be due to the "roundabouts" not being round at all, more like a thruppeny bit, so the transition is anything but smooth as you go around it.

But, it might have been like that in 6.10 and I didn't notice it!

I tested a few things. The speed camera files work best when Garmin Cyclops is disabled. If you don’t disable it, the Cyclops warning appears on the screen and your own custom alert is barely visible. When Garmin Cyclops is turned off, the location is shown on the screen and you hear a sound before you reach the point. It’s also possible to add your own sound, but for each speed camera the name must be identical. :) :) :)
