I'll try a different OTG cable when I get the chance, but I don't think it will be successful.
Done :-)
It now looks different from what I remember from previous experiences.
I took another OTG cable, UCB C to USB A, and plugged it into the Galaxy, then connected i this USB A Cabel Plug to the zumo XT2 using a USB A to USB C cable.
I also tried again using a USB C to USB C cable directly.
Both methods were partially successful (now).
The zumo XT2 allowed start data transfer connection with the Menu like “PC transfere” (i don't know the correct english menu name).
Then I saw something was happening on the Galaxy, i selected MTP Host, and then the "files" app.
The "files" app was new for me, i never reconiced it before.

OK, so far so good, I was then able to access the zumo XT2 with the “files” app, at least I can see device content, but may in something like (read-only ?) mode
Unfortunately, I was unable to copy files to the XT2, because the copying process starts but then aborts without success. :(

FrankB wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 6:28 am ... But judging from my TripManager experience I would say that the XT2 is at least backward compatible with the XT when you look at the USB Transfer protocol. The XT, XT2, Tread 2, and even older devices like Zumo 340/350/590/595 can all be used using the same MTP protocol.
Thanks for pointing that out :geek:
I thought, but I may be wrong, that the old zumo XT could also be displayed as a drive with a letter in Windows Explorer :?: which is no longer possible with the new zumo XT 2 :?
Anyway, your comment triggered me to try it again

giuseppe66 wrote: Sat Feb 07, 2026 6:20 pm ... so it seems the only way to transfer the GPX files in my MRA address book to the XT2 is via microSD card or USB-C cable.
I suspect that's exactly how it is (at best) :!:
But who knows, maybe there's someone else who's managed it and can tell us how to do it :ugeek:

PS
The USB settings such as: Data, Media, MIDI, or charging only refer to the smartphone itself, namely which functions it is allowed to provide. This allows you to control what the other remote device (PC and so on) sees and what don't.
However, the point here is to use what the zumo XT2 provides, and that is exactly the opposite direction that controls it, namely the zumo XT2.

Another experience from 3 more experiments.

I have explicitly tried all 3 zumo XT2 MTP mode settings:
I tried 1st “MTP Auto Detect
then I tried 2nd “USB Ethernet
and finally 3rd “USB Ethernet Single Session

The result was always the same: no success :( I can read zumo XT2 content but not write, not even create a folder on the device.

This raises the question: why does everything work with Windows but not with “my” Android?
When I get the chance, I'll try again with other Android devices; I still have a few lying around in a drawer ;-)

I'd be interested to know,
what experiences Apple IOS users have had.

No.

I have a Samsung A35 and an older Samsung A41.
The XT2 recognises that something is connected, but nothing I can do on either Android phone recognises the presence of the XT2.
It says that USB is controlled by the connected device, and would not let me switch to the phone.

I've not tried the XT1 - I need a USB A to USB C adaptor.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Just as an aside,
I my self won't be monitoring or trying to analyze this feature any further; it's not worth more time

The same thing happened with my "good old" Galaxy S10 Plus; it didn't show me any content from the zumo XT2 :(
Only one time, I saw (that after connecting and activating the connection to the PC in the zumo XT2 dialog box), my S10 + asked me, which App should use the "MTP Host", but from then on, all other functions related to the XT2 data disappeared and i see nothing.
since i also haven't seen or been able to repeat the question about the app for “MTP Host” use :-(

That's good, as you say, that's how it should be :geek:
The smartphone doesn't provide the device data, so there's nothing to control.
The zumo XT2 has “actual” control over the data; the smartphone only remote use the “tasks” and for gives/use data.

For the older garmins you need a USBc to USBa adaptor to connect the phone to the Garmin USBa to USB Mini B lead. But any phone on Android 14 or above will be able to "See" the contents of the Zumo XT and presumably the XT2 which will need a USBc to USBc lead? The XT and the XT2 use the MTP Media Transfer Protocol to connect to computers. Older devices use Mass Storage and connect with older versions of Android as well as later versions. This make route planning and storage on a phone handy if you are using routing software like MyRoute app as you can transfer routes (in my case) to old zumo 340's or 390's via cable from my phone.
Hi,
I'm interested to manage the storage on my XT using my Samsung A14 (Android 15) and OTG. I tried all sorts of settings but nothing works. I can connect a USB stick and copy files back and forth, I can connect a mouse or KBD and use it like on a PC; but when I connect my Zumo XT, Zumo goes in USB mode, the phone recognizes that a USB connection has been made and offers me to choose between "Connected device" and "This device". Not sure what the exact words are on a phone configured for English languange. Mine is configured for Dutch (I live in Flanders, Belgium). I'm assuming that I need to select "This device" to make the phone the master, but when I do that it says "switching host beween devices..." and after a short while it says something like "Failed to switch between devices", breaks the USB connection, Zumo restarts and I'm back to square 1.
I never see the Zumo in the Phone's file manager.
Any clues how to make this work ?
Everything else what I need works fine: Garmin Drive, USB connection to my WIN 11 PC, connection with BaseCamp, etc...

No. I’ve tried everything that I can think of.

Well, not quite. There are all sorts of facilities in the administrator mode on an Android phone. And when I get in there, there are options that I don’t understand. But I can, for example, display my phone screen on the computer and operate it using the mouse and keyboard - very useful for putting together a demonstration.

But very confusing operating the correct device. I usually end up trying to operate the Zumo with the mouse.

A shown in the screenshots above my Motorola Neo edge 40 running Android 15 just connects to My Zumo XT. I use this ability to delete files within the GPX folder on the XT to keep it tidy if I modify files I've created in MyRoute app and only want to see these on the Zumo XT when I load them.

For my Zumo 340 and 390 I use CX file explorer to transfer files from my phone to the memory or SD cards in the units.

The only reason I can see that would cause folk not to be able to do this would be something the phone manufacturer has added to Android OS to stop it from happening or a a dodgy USB lead (I use a Garmin one) or USB A to C convertor that does not support data transfer only charging?

Re: Tread app "Enabling Storage" automatically

Post by jfheath »

Today I had a su...... (ie the start of what I thought wa success.)
Except it got me no further.

I cannot repeat it, But I plugged my USB C cable into the phone and into the XT2.
A small icon appeared next to the date once the XT2 had gone into file transfer mode. I pulled down on it and it said something relating to the connection of the XT2. I don't recall what it said and tried to get a screen shot, but in doing so I moved to the next screen !
[edit] Just looked at my notification history - it said "USB for File Transfer". Currently it is saying "Charging Connected Device via USB."

I had an app called File Manager+ and that opened up. It might have already been open. I don't know. But I captured the following screen shots:
Click the image to view it in a bit more detail.

So these are some of the following screens:

Connecting Phone by USB.jpg
Connecting Phone by USB.jpg (118.92 KiB) Viewed 1012 times

I was able to browse around the folder structure in internal storage and on the SD card. I had to select a location and set it as the default.
No matter which location I tried, I always got the same message - the selected folder is not the top level. The top level is either Internal Storage or SD Card. Even when I chose these I got the same message. So it can see the folders, but cannot do anything with them.

But I have so far been unable to reproduce this.
I had previously reset the XT2 to factory. Tread had been deleted from my phone and the BT link to XT2 had been destroyed. I had previously set the MTP settings on the Zumo XT2 to USB Ethernet (NOT single session) and that is what the setting is still showing. I do not know whether this had any effect on this behaviour.

One thing I do remember is that the connection seemed to 'pop up' - presumably after the XT2 had made its connection. But I cannot get it to do it again.

I'm going to try to repeat this behaviour with the current settings to find out how to repeat it. Then see if I can do the same with MTP mode set to Auto. And then see if I can do it with Tread linked, but not synched.
