You can have Basecamp and express open at the same time in Windows. In earlier versions of windows I found that one or other would occasionally crash if that was the case. Some say this happens if both are trying to access a device via the USB port. My conjecture from above, was it might also be because both run different versions of dotnet at the same time. I haven't run Basecamp while updating maps on a garmin device using express for years because of previous bad experiences. I also don't run express in the background or have it load at Startup for similar reasons. It might all be hunky dory in Windows 11 I haven't tried and can't think of a scenario I'd want both running simultaneously.

You obviously need a functioning windows version of basecamp to do this. I run Windows and Linux on two separate hard drives on the machine I did this on so it was easy for me.
I no longer have a functioning windows version of basecamp, so this is where I would fail. I will, however, follow your path to this point sometime over the next few days and see where I get to. Thanks for all the detailed information!

I do still have my basecamp data safely stored in Dropbox. Some of it I exported as gpx files before I changed to Linux, but as the AllData.gdb is still there I tried converting it to gpx via Babel. No such luck. It might have a gdb extension but Babel reckons it's an unknown format!
