The route could be split into 2 routes, one to the ferry, and the other from the ferry.
One route is better than two if it can be made to work of course.

This forces Basecamp to route between two points that it would not otherwise do but what I have since learned is that a recalculation of the route by the device will likely circumvent the stretch of road that Basecamp was forced to route over. I suspect that the same would occur with an MRA created route. Do you know?
I'm not sure. I'll test it out when I get a chance. The HERE maps within MyRoute-app seem to be dynamically updated with road closure information. I can try to route through a road closure. I'm not familiar with the GPX data format, but according to the MRA link above, skip causes the "waypoint listed as a point where no route calculation on the road is necessary, you will only be pointed in the right direction. You could also say that the route pauses, as it were, while you are travelling between the two waypoints and navigation and route calculation will continue when you arrive at the next point."

Seems fairly simple and basic.

I believe that is exactly what the "Direct" trick in Basecamp does. It is not routing you over roads to the next route point, it is just pointing you in a straight line to it. Obviously that is what must happen for a route to traverse a ferry crossing.
