Keep in mind that routes stored on the SD card will never be modified by the XT whereas routes in internal storage might be. An example is the inadvertent modification of a route point while reviewing the route in the XT. When this happens, the result can be a very different route than what was intended. The XT may disregard shaping points, presenting you with a route that it "thinks" is the best way to travel between via points. This is not just a recalculation. The route file is permanently modified with the changes. Having the ability to delete such a route and re-import the original from the SD card is reassuring.

Be sure to recalculate your stored routes in Basecamp before loading them to the Zumo again - maps may have changed since you last used the route.
When I load new maps, I run Basecamp, select all of the routes, then right-click, Recalculate the Selected Routes. Takes a minute or two.

I might try that if I were more confident that all of my routes are perfectly defined by the vias and shaping points. Some of my early routes are pretty sketchy and based on very old maps, so when I recalculate, I do it one at a time so I can see how badly it is changed. Maybe some cold winter evening I will take the time to clean up my collection.

I can relate to that. I don't have confidence that a calculation with a new map won't mess up a route so I only do it when I have time to compare the result with the track created from the previous map. Of course I will calculate an old route before transferring to my XT, analyzed for changes first.
