What bike(s) do you ride?

Post by Stu »

One thing I have noticed is there isn't a lot of chit chat on here!

So come on people what bike or bikes do you ride?

Me I have a 2001 FJR 1300

I have owned this bike for around 5 years now and I must say I don't really get on with it!

I am a sports bike rider through and through and used to own a 1997 TL1000s but I work odd shifts and the wife works Mon - Fri 9-5 and she wouldn't get on the TL so I bit the bullet and bought the FJR so we could both get out and spend time together when possible! It worked a treat and we do all sorts of touring in the UK and Europe and the bike is great for that part.

I also have a BMW F650st as a project which is going very slowly!

But I have only 1 bike :( . I tell folks "I ride more than some, less than others". Here where I am the weather is generally nice, averaging 1.5 days of rain per week so I commute a lot and I'm fortunate to have several other riders close around me. We keep up with each other via forums and texts when planning a ride and it's not at all unusual for me to tack on 300-400 miles in a day just for something good to eat. We've been slowly picking through Dave726's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives POI list.

The big thing for me that racked up the miles was a decision I made 6 or 7 years ago. See, I had by then, been riding the same old loop roads and frankly it was getting very boring. So one day I decided to visit one of our state parks because someone had mentioned it had a great view. It did and when I got home the web offered up 26 other state parks just in North Carolina. So I decided I was going to visit all of them on my bike. And I did, seeing wonderful things and sights. We have an excellent park system in this state and I would have missed much of it b/c the parks are often at the end of a road and as we know, we tend to ride loops. I planned multi-day RTE trips around these points and got to see more of my state than most residents dream of.

Along the way I found state recreational areas, state forests, lighthouses, state historic sites and much more so what started out as 27 destinations is now up to 65 different visited places. And I'm not done yet, there's a few more I need to go to! Each star below indicates a park, etc. I went to. The yellow star near the middle is where I live.

My present bike is a 2007 GL1800 which I bought in 2012 with 18K miles recorded.
Since then I have put just over 55K miles on it--all leisure miles, no commuting.

Our travels have taken us over most of Europe as seen in photo.
This was my wife's presentation for our Church Flower Festival this year with photos from many of the places visited.
