Clearing Internal Memory

Despite resetting my 595 at least three times, there are still (some) tracks and routes held in it. Is there a more effective method of clearing the internal memory or all user data rather than holding a finger on the lower right corner of the screen?

The reason for doing this is that I have created two routes, only slightly different, and the 595 only imports only one for some unfathomable reason and I thought that a system reset was a good starting point because I haven't done so in years.

Further to the above: after my fourth reset, I have been invited to import a route - goodness knows where from because the uSD card was not installed. Having said "yes" to importing the route, it is not found in Trip Planner but I can see it - and a mystery route - under the "import" option of Trip Planner.

After more resets the faulty route is still visible but cannot be imported.

Oh, and I can see another route when looking at internal memory via BC, but cannot delete it.

All the Waypoints and routes in the above screen grab are in internal memory after a full reset.

I've just done another reset and Waypoint 001 has appeared in place of all the others. Aucun route stubbonly remains!!

Foolishly, I thought that clearing the GPX folder from the 595 had solved the problem and I, rashly, tried to prove so by "receiving data" from it:

If you plug your zumo into a computer and go to File Explorer if you are a Windows user and navigate to here

And delete these files and anything in Archive

Then there will be nothing to import into tracks or trips.

If you have an sd card navigate to here.

And delete the contents. I do this before every trip I use my devices on as I just want the routes and tracks for that trip not a load of routes I don't need.

The file layouts in my Zumo 390 and XT are pretty much the same so I expect they will be similar in yours. Just don't mistakenly delete anything important like system files

To get rid of everything, you have to start at the Zumo screen.

Delete all routes/trips
Delete all tracks
Delete all Waypoint - these are in Where To->Favourites in the Uk ( where To->Saved in USA).

Also get rid of data in History / Where I have Been

Then connect to the computer by USB cable and delete any gpx file in internal storage/gpx except maybe the three described below.
Do the same for any on the Sd card in Garmin/Gpx folder.

The three gpx files to keep - or not.

Position.gpx - contains your location when you last turned off the Zumo. If this is deleted, it doesn’t know where you are, so it doesn’t know where the satellites are, so it takes a few minutes to find your location. The same happens if you turn it off and travel by ferry to (say) Spain.

CurrentTrackLog.gpx - this contains the tracks of where you have ridden recently. These can be loaded into mapping software like Basecamp to keep a record of where you have been - track, date, time, elevation, speed. Very useful historical records.

Archive. This is a folder that contains numbered versions of previous track logs. It keeps the last 20 and overwrites the oldest one when CurrentTrackLog.gpx becomes full. If you like to keep them Save the entire folder every couple of months. If you factory reset or delete all of your data from the Zumo screen - the track logs and the archive folder are deleted. So save them first and start a new folder on your computer for your next downloads - as it will start form 1.gpx again

Current.gpx. Delete this. It contains most of what is in the Zumo, and by now should be empty, but that isn’t always the case.If you delete it first, then it is recreated at startup from whatever it had stored, hidden away somewhere.

A new Current.gpx will be created if it doesn’t exist when you reboot.

What perplexed and frustrated me is that factory resets were not deleting the track logs and ruthless file/folder deletion via Windows explorer was the only solution

You can turn off the display of track logs on most Zumos.

The track logs will appear as light blue lines on the map - rather annoying on roads that you ride frequently, but useful on long trips.

On the 590: Settings -> Map & Vehicle -> Map Layers -> Trip Log (tick/Untick) -> Save.

You can disable the recording of your track log on most zumos.

On the 590 : Setting -> Device -> Travel History (tick / untick)

If you choose to not allow Travel history to be recorded, it will affect the accuracy of the displayed duration of your ride, and your ETAs will not be very accurate.

I find the track logs to be a very useful historic record. I download them every 2-3 months - depending how much I have been riding - and keep them on the computer in a mapping program. I use Memory Maps with OS maps and various others available for EU countries. But you can store them in a separate Basecamp Database. if you wish.

As the years go by, I will remember having a holiday in Spain, but forget the fine detail of where we went. These are a useful reminder
