Bricked Zūmo 590 after timezone update via Garmin Express — looking for help

Post by heronimos »

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone here has experience unbricking a Zūmo 590, because mine is stuck in a bootloop after a Garmin Express timezone update and I've run out of ideas.

What happened
My Zūmo 590 (product code 006-B2079-00, last known firmware 3.3) was connected to my Windows 11 PC when Garmin Express pushed a timezone update. The update appeared to complete in under 15 seconds, but immediately after the device went into a bootloop and hasn't recovered since.
Symptoms
It continuously loops: brief Garmin logo → black screen → reboot. When I place my fingers on the top-left of the screen while connecting USB, it consistently shows "System" (scrolling) followed by "Loading" before resetting again.
What I've tried
I've been working on this for a while and have tried quite a few things. Holding the power button for 20–30 seconds has no effect. Removing the SD card makes no difference — the same bootloop occurs on internal memory alone. A hard reset (bottom-right finger press) executes but doesn't resolve anything. I've attempted the preboot combo (top-left and top-right fingers while connecting USB), which does seem to trigger the "System / Loading" screen, but the device resets before it completes loading — so I can't confirm whether true preboot mode is actually being reached.

On the USB side, I've tested on both my Windows 11 PC (Garmin Express v7.28.0) and an older Windows 8 PC (Garmin Express v7.13), with Garmin USB drivers installed on both. On every attempt I get the connect sound immediately followed by the disconnect sound — the device is recognized for a split second but never appears as a drive in Explorer. I've tried multiple cables, direct PC ports and a USB 2.0 hub, all with the same result. I've also checked the Express download folders and CoreService but couldn't find a usable .gcd for this device.

The device is out of warranty and I'm not expecting any help from Garmin, even though their update caused this. Any help or pointers from this community would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum @heronimos .

I have a few tricks that you could try - I am not holding out much hope for this first one though - but do it anyway.
1. Disconnect the battery - be careful with that white connector - it looks as though the toppart is in two parts. It isn't You have to lift the plastic body - nails under each side, and press in the latch that is closest to the bottom of the Zumo case.

Leave it a couple of minutes. Then reconnect it and replace the back.

Use a USB cable to connect it to a decent charger - a main socket USB will do perfectly. Let it power up if it will. If not hold in the power button for at least 30 seconds count slowly. Its a long time and your finger will try to tell you that your 30 seconds is up before it actually is.

I have been trying tot get to the pre-boot menu. Perhaps I am mistaken and I never did that on the 590. I do know how to install the 595 software onto a 590, and how to put the 590 software back again.

That might be worth a try. I'v got all of the stuff here - I'm just going through it again 'cos although I was doing it almost every week - switching between 595 and 590 software - I have forgotten it all - fortunately I have detailed notes on how to do it.

What I am thinking is that you might be able to install an earlier version of the 590 software, and then let Express update it for you.

this part is key --> your 590 needs to be recognized as a drive in File Explorer with a its own drive letter,

View Map -> Speed - Hold down circular speedo button for 10 seconds until display changes
Configuration and Settings -> MTP settings -> Mass Storage ->save
Also - while you are there - RWFS settings - Show RWFS in Mass storage.

This link will give you an idea of what we will be asking you to do.

It is worth reading through to see if you are able to do this. But you will need a program Updater.exe and an rgn file or two - which are the working versions of your GCD file. In particular you will have to practice the action - you have about 2 seconds to get your right hand to the mouse and click the correct button while holding down two fingers on the Zumo screen immediately after plugging in the USB cable. And your Zumo needs to have enough battery power.

I can get you the files later on. What nationality are you or your Zumo - 'cos that might make a difference ?
I need to have a go at doing it with mine. I'm having to use a powered cradle, 'cos my battery will not last long enough.

If the 590 is not booting past the Garmin logo, there is no point in discussing configuration settings and storage modes.

My hope is for a battery too weak to complete the boot process. Starting it in a powered mount might work.

I fear that the battery may have been too weak during the update, and data was written to memory incorrectly or incompletely. Many computer USB ports provide only a meager 0.5A, which may not be enough to keep a Zumo working properly during an update if the battery is already low.

I agree, but the 590 will work happily with a powered USB cable attached to change configuration. My battery is completely useless (it’s not actually the battery - because it was the same when I replaced it with new), but I can use it all day long if it is plugged into a usb power supply to configure it.

I’m currently testing the update process while it is plugged into a powered cradle, because you cannot update from Express via the USB cable or perform a software update if the battery is low - the power from the computer is not enough to keep it alive.

Normally you can get enough charge into a 590 to last 30 minutes, but not if it is like mine. If the motorcycle mount is permanently mounted, you might be able to use the car mount - if it came with one. The car mount came with built in speakers and a 12v cigarette lighter style plug. That could be attached to a 12v power source and still give access to the usb socket.

We could do with a response from @heronimos.

Heronimos was sleeping :D I now has to work all day. Think I can get back to this next weekend, but every bit of advice welkom in the meanwhile

Thanks so far for you all.

1) It could get reflash the firmware using updater.exe. That work, but still the bootloop (used the same proces as flashing it to a 595, but with the 590 firmware).
2) Battery did work fine before the bootloop (could plot a course while having a drink on the terras)
3) I'm now looking into cure firmware. A bit exiting, but.

I must have a autocradle. Wil go look for it.

I tried with a very early version of the software - version 2.70 - but my 590 did not like it and on start up, it had a long wait and then reinstalled the version that had been there - version 3.30

That might be happening to you. I will find a rgn file before 3.30 that works with mine and report back. Ive got another 3 to go at. One of them must work - they worked before.

19:47 7 April 2026

My rgn file for v3.20 loads in perfectly. I noted that after the last failed attempt, the 590 had switched back to MTP mode (Media Transfer Protocol) and I needed to change it back again to Mass Storage before turning off the power completely. I found that pressing the upper left and lower left corners of the screen worked better then pressing the lower right.

I'll try and update it to the current software using Express next.

Express has found the Zumo - I'd cleared out registrations a few months ago, so it is now re-registered.
Version 4.60 is the latest software apparently...Hmm. How did that happen - it has installed the 595 software !!

Now this is a second hand unit that I used to replace my previous 590. I've never installed any different software on this until now. I guess that the previous owner has done that. Maybe the installation failed, and it has reverted back to the previous GCD file. But it went through a cycle of starting up a few times....

Ah - I see what has happened. I have two GCD files that are for version 3.20. One is 590 v.20 the other is 595 v3.20
I have only one rgn file for v3.20 and used that - turns out that is was created using the 595 software. So when I connected it to Garmin Express and Express it recognised the Zumo as a 595 and installed the latest v5.95 software !!! So no we know that putting in old software and using Express to overwrite it works.... Try again.

20:33

Ok this time I used v3.10 for the 590 software. Did the same install process, and it is now a Zumo 590 again running v3.10 software.
Now to update it with Express.
ok done that. I've unpluuged it and plugged it in - and it sat there for a long time doing not bery much with the Garmin screen and the credits at the bottom. Then is started up and reconnected to the computer and Express. 3 Updates available, the software is not one of them.
So I updated those three - Navigator Europe, Traffic Text, Proximity Text 20:40 -
Maps said they could take 2 hours. My fault, I haven't updated the maps on this device for a couple of years.
