garmin express installing wrong mapos to zumo xt
garmin express installing wrong mapos to zumo xt
tried using freshly installed garmin express on my win 11 pc to update maps on my zumo xt and it struggled hanging twice. this was while trying to install to computer as well? changed the destination folder to a different hard drive.
i was clicking on a 2026 city navighator europe map which by default was unchecked?
anyway third time i tried updating maps by leaving the folder as default in c drive.
it updated zumo software then told me i had map updates and i clicked install and then it finished telling me it had installed different maps to what i was expecting. ioverlander worldwide pois 2027.10 and topoactive powersports europe 2022.20
sit said it was up to date. i disconnected and waited for the zumo to do its grey status bar thing and then it said cannot unlock maps.?
i have options if i reconnect to gar expr to reinstall the map. but where has my city navigator map gone? there is one in my hard drive i just checked.

Re: garmin express installing wrong mapos to zumo xt
i just realised if i click manage maps the citynavigator europe is unchecked. and under that in blue is change region.
like wtf?
left column says my maps and city navigator has a (0) next to it but points of interest and topoActivepowersprts both have (1)
im assuming i need to check or tick the box next to city navigator and then i get an apply changes.
never had to do this before.

and the same thing has happened while trying to install that map i get to applying changes time remaining 19% and it freezes. the rate of transfer disappears and in task manager cpu is at zero. i left it 10 mins. first 2 times, this time i will leave it half an hour. but its not looking good.
although the cancel button changes colour whn i hover over it.
i see my posts need to be approved by a mod so im not going to get a reply anytime zoom.
hopefully google to the rescue
im thinking of simply copying the map on my c drive onto the sd card in the zumo but ive learned that nothing in life is usually that simple

uninstalled garmin express. restarted pc. installed garmin express
reinstalled the map that was installed. but on disconnection it says cannot unlock maps.
went to sign in on garmins site and it wouldnt recognise my password. saved both on my pc in a text file and in google passwords so i know i was getting it right.
changed it, can now log in. it lists my present zumo unit and my previous but doesnt list anything under products or subscriptions.
i was sure i had lifetime maps inc city navigator europe.

lol finally this time when i ticked the box for city navigator it installed and according to garmin express under my maps i now have three. including the 2027 city nav eur.
theres 2 hours of my life im never going to get back.
the maddest thing is when GE asks you to unplug then reconnect it takes ages like 3 minutes

Re: garmin express installing wrong mapos to zumo xt
The only thing I have for a suggestion is to connect the XT to Garmin Express again and reinstall the map. Know that it can take a looooong time for a map update to happen. 10 minutes was not nearly enough time before giving up on it. It does not make any difference how fast of an internet connection you have, the Garmin servers seem to be very slow.
A known aggravation is that after each update you must disconnect the XT and reboot it, and you must restart Garmin Express before connecting the XT again.
BTW, I am confused about your references to drive C: if you were trying to update a zumo XT.

Re: garmin express installing wrong mapos to zumo xt
the files were transferring for a time then it slowed down to a stop. and then froze. and after 10 minutes of zero cpu activity in task manager i pulled the plug. even if the servers were slow garmin express would have still be showing some signs of activity in task manager?
i also wanted the files installed to pc so as to use basecamp without having the unit connected like i have done many times before.
but i dont want them on the default c drive. there is now an option in garmin express to install these maps where you want them negating the need for the java thingy

Re: garmin express installing wrong mapos to zumo xt
I would not expect to see any CPU activity considering the activity is a download from a Garmin server to the XT. I think at that point the PC is just a pass-thru device. I don't know that for certain though.aljaxon wrote: Sat Mar 28, 2026 3:40 pm the files were transferring for a time then it slowed down to a stop. and then froze. and after 10 minutes of zero cpu activity in task manager i pulled the plug. even if the servers were slow garmin express would have still be showing some signs of activity in task manager?
Got it. Didn't know you were talking about the "Install to PC" function. AFAIK, a successful update on the XT is required before the installation to PC will work. That said, there have been a number of reports lately about the map being locked after installing to the PC. Some folks, including me, have had success after numerous retries (uninstall the map from the PC and then try installing again).aljaxon wrote: Sat Mar 28, 2026 3:40 pm i also wanted the files installed to pc so as to use basecamp without having the unit connected like i have done many times before.

Re: garmin express installing wrong mapos to zumo xt
even when garmin express is open with the zumo xt not connected in task manager it says "youre up to date" its using between 0.4 and 2% cpu.
i had already seen that i would have to reinstall the maps i just wondered if there was a quicker easier way.
i reinstalled the maps one by one and still got the error until id done all 3. i was getting the error with just 2 maps installed before i put the city navigator on and that was the last to reinstall and that fixed it. some logic.
after the first failed update of maps it had also failed to install to my other hard drive.
after the second failed install it HAD installed to the C drive default location but not to the zumo. and basecamp was able to use it.
and the third attempt after i'd uninstalled and installed garmin expresss with a reboot inbetween it installed the maps to zumo but with the unable to unlock error.
only a reinstall of the 3 maps got rid of the error. just went for a spin and it worked like normal.
seemed to remember having a problem like this 10 or more years ago
(task manager still reporting albeit small cpu activity despite no connection and been left alone for 10 mins.)
now dare i ask if its wise to install the maps to the sd card?
