I recently obtained a reconditioned xt2 from Garmin Australia to replace my damaged xt.
I had North America maps on my previous xt and have North America maps on my 590.
Do I need to once again purchase the North America maps for my new xt2.

If you purchased North American maps for your previous Zumos on SD card, the card should still work in the XT2, but will be slightly out-of-date.

When you download the CNNT NA maps, they only work on those specific units, and cannot be transferred or updated without another purchase.

Before you spend another $100 on a map, try using a free Open Streets Map. There are many sources, but I like the maps from OpenMapChest.org for their appearance and detail. Clear installation instructions are on the site, and the maps are updated every week or two. Downloads are free with a Bittorrent client, or the files can be downloaded directly with a donation to support their server. The only advantage I have found to a Garmin map is that it may show the current speed limit in the map window while the OSM map does not.

Yes, assuming you're talking about Garmin CN maps, as they aren't transferable between devices, unless as already mentioned they were supplied on a card.

My XT2 has the ability to download maps from for example the America's and Africa, is that only applicable to my UK bought Garmin?

Yes, I didn't know that they did a Travel Edition like the 595.

I exchanged my 595 as it wouldn't download CN EU and Africa at the same time for an XT2 and it came with the America / Africa etc maps.

I just looked at three websites for Australian zumo XT2 distributors.
All of them include the following information:

EXTENSIVE MAP COVERAGE
Preloaded topographic maps with 3D terrain and street maps for Europe and Middle East. Africa including Tracks4Africa, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand maps are available as free downloads via garmin.com/express.

If that’s the case, you should be able to easily load the maps onto your GPS using GarminExpress.
Note: You’ll need enough storage space; Australia and the North America might not fit on the GPS at the same time, so you may need an SD card to install the maps both.

Garmin units typically come with maps based on the region they were sold in, so if your replacement XT2 came from Australia, it may only include that region by default. Even if you had North America maps on your previous unit, those don’t always transfer automatically. You might need to re-download or reassign them through your Garmin account if they’re linked there.

The XT2 and the XT3 have the option to download maps from other regions. For example my XT3 came with Europe. But using Garmin Express I was able to download USA maps.
