Try these from my sitting bored at home Google searches which you may have done already. If not;
"There is no setting for none.
But your description sounds like, inside your Browser, you have checked the box that says, 'open "safe" downloaded files automatically.
Uncheck that box, and this will no longer be a problem, because downloaded files will just be placed in the downloads folder, NOT opened."

Files exported with Explorer sign
Re: Files exported with Explorer sign
Thanks regain!
May I gently ask what icon is being shown at the beginning of the file name when you export from BC? Mine used to show a sort of white paper icon. I guess this was to show that there was no association of any default app for opening file?
I did now manage to export file and it is showing the BC icon in front of name.

Re: Files exported with Explorer sign
This is correct. It is what is shown for me with no association.Wenzudeg wrote: Sat Mar 21, 2026 5:51 pm May I gently ask what icon is being shown at the beginning of the file name when you export from BC? Registry hack. The file associations are stored in here in the registry:Wenzudeg wrote: Sat Mar 21, 2026 1:52 pm How can I disassociate .gpx from ANY program/application and choose EVERY TIME what to open with?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
Once there you can either delete the .gpx key (right-click > Delete) or you can keep the data associated with the .gpx extension (eg: Open with history) by opening the .gpx key and deleting the UserChoice subkey. I suggest doing some internet research on this to confirm appropriateness to your operating system and for some visual examples showing exactly what needs to do. NOTE: Editing the registry is inherently dangerous. Take the necessary precautions (eg: BACK IT UP first; use extreme caution).

AI says:
Steps to Disassociate a File Type (Windows 10/11)
Create a Dummy File: Right-click on your desktop, select New > Text Document. Rename it to dummy.exe (ensure you change the .txt extension to .exe).
Change File Association: Right-click a file of the type you want to disassociate, select Open with > Choose another app.
Set Dummy App: Check "Always use this app to open .[ext] files", click "More apps," scroll down and select "Look for another app on this PC".
Select Dummy: Select the dummy.exe file you created on the desktop.
Delete Dummy: Delete the dummy.exe file.
Restart PC: Restart your computer to finalize the removal.
Alternative Methods
- Registry Editor: Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\[.ext] and delete the specific extension key, then restart explorer.exe.
- Command Line: Run assoc .[ext]= in Command Prompt as Administrator to clear association.
- Reset All: In Settings > Apps > Default apps, click "Reset" at the bottom to restore Microsoft recommended defaults.

@Wenzudeg sorry, I cannot help you on that one as I gave up using Basecamp with the XT2 and can't remember.Wenzudeg wrote: Sat Mar 21, 2026 5:51 pm May I gently ask what icon is being shown at the beginning of the file name when you export from BC? @Wenzudeg
The way I see it, the others have already been able to help you out for the most part, and it is, or rather was, a standard Windows feature with file associations.
But the question I have is, why don’t you try choosing a default program for GPX files that better meets your needs
OK, for GPX files BC probably isn’t the best default program
Linking it to Explorer, Edge, or another web browser isn’t really ideal either
But a lightweight GPX tool that immediately displays the contents of the GPX file,
wouldn’t it be good to make something like that the default for GPX files
There are certainly many good tools out there, but RouteConverter https://www.routeconverter.com/ comes to my mind
RouteConverter is a Powerful (and very lightweight also) tool that doesn’t require installation and displays GPX content on maps immediately “out of the box.”
It supports many online maps, but also (though not out of the box) local offline maps.

Re: Files exported with Explorer sign
That is what I was trying to determine when I asked what the objective was for double-clicking a .gpx file. Obviously, knowing where you are going is required in order to figure out how to get there.proofresistant wrote: Sun Mar 22, 2026 2:46 pm But the question I have is, why don’t you try choosing a default program for GPX files that better meets your needs

Re: Files exported with Explorer sign
I also am a bit bewildered by the preference for NO file association. I have many programs that can use a .gpx (or other file type), but surely there is one that is used most often. Why go through the extra steps to right-click, select an app, choose "Once" for every file, when a quick double-click will work most commonly? Save the Open with routine for the exceptions.
