So I'm a little confused, hoping someone here can help clear things up for me. Here's my current setup.

XT2, Version 6.40
BaseCamp 4.7.5
Just updated to GE 7.28.0.0
Windows 10 (computer to old to update)

I'm not getting the the option to update maps to my computer anymore. I had GE 7.24 loaded for a long time, but just today when I updated my XT2 maps to CNNA 2027.1 my GE 7.24 no longer had the option to update my computer maps, where it did before. My last maps updates were back in Oct '25. I had read here back then that there was problems with newer version of GE that were getting rid of this option, so I kept the 7.24 for the last couple of years. I decided to update to the latest version of GE, but still no update to computer option.

What's confusing me is that I see some people saying that they are getting the option.
by jfheath » 11 Feb 2026 09:59 All working OK. 7.28 Express is working. 2027.10 Europe maps NTU installed on the XT1, XT2 and Basecamp.
Now I have noticed that jfheath is in the UK and I'm in the US, and I'm wondering if that's the difference that's causing me not to see the update option, I seem to remember that there were different "flavors" of GE for different countries/regions.

If there isn't a way to update the maps on the computer through GE for the US users, is there a workaround? Can I just download the maps from somewhere and install them , maybe with a third party app? Thanks for your help.

I only have an XT, but I was able to install the map to my PC with 7.28.
The only thing I noticed was that the PC map was locked(installed to pc 1st) until after I installed to the XT(then the pc map was unlocked)

You don't say how you updated your XT2 to CNNA 2027.1 but I had an experience with my XT that resulted in GE not seeing that a map was installed following a map update via wi-fi. My suggest is to reinstall the map using GE then disconnect the XT2 and restart it. Close GE. Connect the XT2 to he PC. Start GE once the PC recognizes the XT2 is connected. Start GE and see if that helped. IIRC, since 7.24 Garmin has moved the option for installing maps to the PC from 'Map details' to the somewhere accessed by the 'Manage Maps' button.

FWIW, I remain on GE 7.24 so I am hoping I have correctly recalled what I have read in the release notes of a version since 7.24.

There is a trick to this. I cannot remember what it is and at present and I am having my 4.00 am hour of insomnia.
It is something to do with the two options in Express for viewing maps - @Peobody mentioned the manage maps option.
And the install to computer option seem to appears only after installing to the Zumo. I may be mistaken about that conclusion but it is what I thought I had observed. It’s difficult to reproduce this until the next map becomes available without deleting my maps.

I’ll get back to you later - just writing this so that I can easily find the post again.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Step-by-Step Installation Process to Install maps on your Computer

1. Connect and Open Express v7.28: Connect your Garmin device to the PC, open Garmin Express, and select your XT2 device.

2. Verify Device Updates: Ensure your device has the 2027.1 maps installed on it first, or that it is fully updated. "Map Details" or "Manage Maps" is only fully available if the device maps are up to date.

3. Access Map Options: Click on Manage Maps or View Details.

4. Install to Computer:
1.Click on Map Options or Map Details.
2.Select Install to Computer.

5. Run Installer: Follow the on-screen prompts. Garmin Express will download the 2027.1 map files and install them to your computer.

6. Finalize: Once completed, you can use the newly installed 2027.1 maps in Garmin BaseCamp.

Thanks to @electro_handyman for showing me the way. I'm old, and that's the story I'm sticking to.  . For what ever reason, I never even looked at the Computer tab, all I kept focusing on was that under Map Details, there wasn't the option for installing the maps to the computer. And I did install the new maps to the XT2 with GE 7.28.0.0, so in my mind there should have been that option there. Under the Manage Map button, to me it looked like it was just listing the maps installed on the Device, Removable Storage and the Computer, and since I know I didn't have it on the PC, I just never looked there.

I got the updated maps installed and everything looks good. Thank you to all who posted a response, I always learn something when I come here.

I had some problems here as well with the 2027.10 map update.

On my XT, express would not offer me the update, however, I was able to get the 2027.10 map installed on the XT from the XT itself (wifi installation). Once installed on the XT, no problem with installing the map on my PC using express.

Similar issue with my RV 895 gps, the map update was offered with express, however, clicking 'install' did not do anything. Again, installing the map using the device wifi capability resolved my issue.
