Tread with off line maps
Tread with off line maps
I saw that it's possible to download maps to my smartphone's memory so I can use them without a network connection.
What's the point if I need a network connection to transfer the route to the Zumo XT2?
Where am I going wrong?
Bye

Re: Tread with off line maps
When you say "maps" do you mean "routes"? I don't think you can download the Garmin maps to your phone (I could be wrong).
If you meant to say "routes", you don't NEED a network connection to your XT2.
You could download them from your phone to a SD card and import them via the SD slot of the XT2, the XT2 will import the files from the SD card. It's not the simplest but it is doable.

Re: Tread with off line maps
In my app, using the menu (three lines at the top left), in the settings submenu, there's the option to download offline maps.
I did it yesterday.
The same goes for the route.
I'm familiar with SD mode, but I was hoping there was another way (e.g., via Bluetooth) to be completely independent of the wireless network.
The biggest flaw for this system when you're in the middle of nowhere; in my opinion.

Re: Tread with off line maps
I see the "Add Offline Map" now that I went looking for it. Thanks for the heads up on that one.
During my other post on the subject I did mention that Garmin did not setup the device for Bluetooth file transfer and only has it configured as an audio device with contacts. A real shame because sharing a GPX via Bluetooth would be the most effective way to do it.

Re: Tread with off line maps
Me too recently discovered map downloading and was hoping it was for that purpose, since I was using Bluetooth conveniently with Drive and XT1.
But is it possible that only we ask these questions and no one at Garmin?

Re: Tread with off line maps
Routes, once in Tread, should transfer to your XT2 whenever there is either a network or Bluetooth connection. Tread needs to be connected to your XT2 to plan a route. From recent tests, Tread also needs to be linked with Explore to achieve all that so there is no way round to avoid all that other than SD card.
I guess you could do all that to get the routes and in then break the connection. I haven’t tried that though.
Happy for anyone to correct me though.
Edit: please see my post ‘Tread - planning on two devices’. Seems you might be able to now.

Re: Tread with off line maps
I took one last test yesterday and something must have changed.
When you press the circle of arrows on the tread app to sync, a message like: "... if the device is connected to the network or Bluetooth..." appears for a second, which gave us hope.
Then I activated the "Airplane" mode, isolating the smartphone except for bluetooth;
just to be safe, I also turned off wireless on the Zumo XT2 leaving only the Bluetooth interconnection between the two.
I created a route and it immediately moved it to the Zumo XT2.
WOW!!!!
...........
That's it, because editing or creating a new a second or third route remained on the smartphone without being synced.

I activated connectivity, erasing everything, and repeated the experiment.
The first route passes, then nothing.
Activating only the Bluetooth link seems to work, at least in theory, but again the Garmin's effort ends here.
You should try it too.
Becouse I always suspect I'm the one making mistakes...
even if the other party is called Garmin.
If this is the right path, we have hope for the next XT5.

Re: Tread with off line maps
@overlookh I’m happy to test it sometime but that system wouldn’t really work for me. I keep everything ‘online’ so that routes transfer and sync when away on a bike tour. I like to get the weather, traffic and camera updates too.
Re: Tread with off line maps
I also like being connected,
but I occasionally (quite often) find myself in remote areas with poor or no connectivity, and this would be a good way to get around that.
One of the many reasons to choose Zumo over yet another app with online maps is the ability to download the maps stored on your device, thus avoiding constant connectivity.
It wouldn't take much more to make it 100% autonomous, given that they've made the effort to also make the maps stored on your smartphone.
This is to nitpick a system that is in itself very expensive and therefore expectations are maximum.
