I think I see it as I have an XT2 and the maps I can use are different to yours. Certainly the way of managing them is different to when I did it with a 590. I still have my 590 so will try to see what it shows when I connect it up, won't be till tomorrow evening at the earliest though.

what I thought was missing is not missing, the map POI file called Forsquare is on my 396, and since I don't know how to get the new updated garmin Forsquare file, i will leave what i got alone, I was trying to match up my recent MapInstall selected maps to the SDcard with new POI Forsquare file

Forgive me for not getting this .... what are you trying to accomplish? I don't recall any Manage Maps in Express. If I click on one of my devices in Express, I get a screen where I get the ability to Install, and there is a link to Install options where I can install to the computer, device, or both.

the button options on Garmin Express to install on
- Device only
- Device and computer
- Computer only
those buttons are there, and I can see and use those.

The option on Garmin Express that i cannot see and use is the Manage Maps button

what i am trying to accomplish is to install updated maps of North America on my SDcard on the 396, but not all of North America, just the Canadian east coast Provinces, I want updated maps for those on the card, I am also wanting the updated POI Forsquare files for those maps also on the card, my 396 has 6 year old North America maps, so i installed the new updated version maps a few days ago to my PC Computer using Express button to install on Computer only, I now have all of North America on the computer, but all of NA is 7gb and I am trying to put selected NA areas on my SDcard which is 32gb, maybe I could buy an amazon sd card that's 64gb, then download the 3rd party sdcard formatter to format the 64 in FAT32, and use that card in the 396 then use Express to install all of North America onto the 396, I was using the MapInstall program to install selected map areas onto the card, but want to use Express's Manage Maps to organize my card, I am pretty sure that somewhere i saw that Manage Maps button on a Garmin Express picture somewhere, lol maybe I will just buy a whooping huge SDcard, format it in FAT32 and put all Express wants to install on that card lol, sorry for the complications, my brain has always functioned like this lol 8-)

I believe the Manage Maps button is dynamic, appearing only when the connected device supports it. Unfortunately that doesn't explain why you have seen it before with the 396 but don't see it now.

I have read about a method by which you can copy certain files from a device to an SD card that will trick GE into thinking that the card is an actual device (connect the card to the PC instead of the 396). IDK whether that trick would help in this case but seem worth a try nor did I make note of the details of that trick. I hope someone here will have done so and will post the details. In the meantime, I will see if I can find them.

I found it on POI Factory:

I've never seen Manage Maps button option with my 396, I saw it on a google page over the internet. someone had used Garmin Express and the Manage Maps Option was there and they posted a picture of it, i don't know which device they were using, and I am beginning to believe that the Manage Maps Option on Express is only valid when on XT and XT2 devices, according to google that Manage Maps Option is available with some automotive devices

found it, the reason why the zumo 396 does not have that Garmin Express Manage Maps option

(copied from a google search)
The Garmin Zumo XT features a "Manage Maps" option in Garmin Express because it uses a modern, modular mapping system allowing users to add/remove map regions or manage storage via USB. The Zumo 396 lacks this feature because it uses an older, monolithic map update system that typically only offers full reinstallation or reinstalling the entire map set rather than granular region management.

now I know what Garmin has done.

Before the XT gps was introduced, Garmin had their stand-alone MapInstall program app to manage map selections on gps units and sd cards, and when the XT came out thereafter, Garmin put most of the MapInstall app programming code to be included within Garmin Express app itself, so the Manage Maps option that XT and XT2 users see now on Express is actually the previous MapInstall programming code.
So I don't need to see or use the Manage Maps button option on Express to manage my maps because I already have and used the MapInstall app program already.
I was under the assumption that the Express Manage Maps option was a new Garmin creation, but its actually the old MapInstall program code.

Why didn't Garmin programmers just say so on their web page, it would have saved me all that trouble of figuring it all out by myself, lol
