396 lose turn instructions.

Post by ianleics »

I have a 396 connected to a Sena 50 headset. Has been working fine. But on the last trip, I’ve got an odd intermittent problem…. I will be getting turn instructions fine, then they all stop happening. The only way to fix the problem is to power down the sat nav, and power back up. Then, all the turn instructions that ‘should’ have happened, come though back to back, like they have been queued up in a stack.
Then the next few times you use the sat nav, it will work ok, then you get the same problem again.
Any ideas?

Sorry you have not had a reply to this since August.

My XT2 does this as well. I have yet to pin down the circumstances, but my suspicion is that for some reason the XT2 loses connection with the BT headset. So no sound comes through. Once connection is re-established, you get all if the lost instructions one after the other.

I haven’t been able to ride this Summer, so I have not experienced it in a while.

Here is the thread that I posted about it in February - without any resolution. The issue with Tread is not relevant in your case - that is an XT2 thing.

But check how you let your phone discover other BT devices - and think about where your phone / Zumo is located relative to other electronic devices - in your pocket, TFT screen, motorbike electronic control computer (ECU). Phone disconnecting BT when it turns off. Ditto headset. Headset discovering other headsets as you come into range , …..

Clutch at straws. We don’t have an answer as yet, nor can we predict when it will happen.

Do you have music coming to your phone via the internet. Eg Spotify. Is your phone connected to your headset, or to the Zumo.

Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

I have had this happen with my XT as well, although it has been rare and has never re-occurred following a restart while on the same ride. It is as if something takes over the bluetooth channel which the XT detects and starts queueing verbal commands until it has access to the channel. I don't have any clues into what causes this. FWIW, my phone is connected to the XT but media audio is turned off (no music from the phone).

I forgot to say, on the XT2, if you suspect it has started to happen, you can reach round the back of the unit and press the power button. It puts it into standby. Then press it again and it comes back to life pretty quickly, and reestablishes the BT connection.

I play music from my sat nav ie 396, 595, XT and XT2 and don't ever recall having the unit store up instructions, which it then vomits out.

This may be coincidental, but maybe not as I always have the Bluetooth effectively "alive".

I did have the phone connected to the Sena headset as well as the Zumo, but in a process of elimination, I removed the phone pairing, but would still get the problem happening. So the phone is removed from the equation. When I've lost instructions, if I power down the Zumo, then power it back up, I get a "media connected", audio message, but turn instructions are not restored. The only way to clear it, is to power down BOTH the Zumo and the Sena headset. Just doing either one will not clear the problem. Having done that, you then have to sit through 5 minutes of backed up instructions!

just to share my experience the other day, I have a 396 and cardo spirit hd bluetooth headset, I had loaded mp3 music files onto an sd card in the 396 and could get zumo navigation voice audio through the headset but could not get music audio from the zumo, I found the problem was with an old existing bluetooth phone pairing on the headset, I did a factory reset on the headset to start fresh again and bingo, zumo music played through the headset, it was a bluetooth issue, I don't plan to pair my phone to either the 396 or the headset, 8-)
