My XT seems to be stuck on Software Update.
It started when I plugged it into my PC to see if I needed to update the maps. Garmin Express told me that there was a map update but also a software update for the XT, so I first went ahead with that. After a few minutes it showed the message that the SW update had completed and that I should restart the unit. I did that, and the unit told me that it had detected an update and would install it.
Straight after that the screen went blank and nothing further happened.
After a while I activated the unit, it started normally and I thought - fine, that bit is done.
However, when I reconnect the XT to PC to do the map update, GE again says that there is a SW update and it again tries to install it, even though afaikt that has already been done. So, it is now stuck on 'Step1 of 2: Software Udate' saying 'Preparing' and 0% complete. The XT shows the 'connected to pc' graphic.
It has now been showing this for the last 30 minutes even though the screen says 'time remaining 1 minute'. I don't think it is doing anything.
How can I get past this point so I can actually install the map update? Right now all GE does is try to install the SW update that has already been installed, as far as I know. There doesn't seem to be a way to install the new map without first updating the software, and it is stuck on that.

Re: Stuck on Software Update
Ok so I killed the process after 2 hours of nothing happening. I completely turned off the XT, waited a while and the restarted it. It works fine.
Then I reconnected it to the PC and opened Garmin Explorer. This time it does offer me the map updates and it says nothing about updating the XT itself so I think I've crossed that bridge somehow.
There are now 3 separate map udates available, so I picked the smallest one to test, maybe 50 Mb or so?
Well, the same problem again - it is stuck on 'Installing' and nothing seems to happen. Very frustrating, and I'm really loathe to kick-off the 2Gb map update, which is what I really wanted to do.
Note, I am using a PC that is connected by Ethernet and fibre cables to the Internet, with a download speed of over 500 Mb/s.
Perhaps the Garmin server is very slow today, or semi-down for maintenance? Would be nice if GE could show the status.

Thanks for the link, if everything else fails I might try to update over Wifi. I really think it bizarre that updating via USB is all of a sudden so hard when I have done it that way for years.
Anyhow, I tried it again this morning. I started with the smallest map, only a few Mb, and hey - it worked! This update was done in a matter of seconds. Yay!
Then I moved on to the next smallest one. However, for some reason I couldn't just install it - I got the message to disconnect and reconnect the XT from the PC. Ok.... well, if you insist......
Did that and now the installation went fine.
Now the big one, all 10 Gb of it. Once again I am told to disconnect and reconnect the XT. What the heck is this all about???? Certainly this was never needed in the past.
But, what can you do, so I went through this (to me incomprehensible) step and now the map is indeed downloading. Fingers crossed that the connecton will stay up.
Bottom line, I suppose that there were serverside issues yesterday that have now been resolved. I really think that Garmin should ping us a message to that effect in GE when we try to download stuff in such circumstances. Then, I really don't see the point of having to disconnect and reconnect the XT in between individual downloads. Finally, in the past the updates were far more seamless than now, Please Garmin, look at these issues and fix them back to how it once was! I've been using your kit for nearly 20 years now and I can well do without this sort of frustration!
Edit to add: the updates have been completed, I'm pleased to say.

Re: Stuck on Software Update
Good to read that you resolved the updating issue. What I noticed during updates: You can get the same failure symptoms when the W11 PC went into its screensaver. Moving the mouse while updating to prevent the pc to go in its screensaver or screen lock.
Re: Stuck on Software Update
@Snijderj The part of connection and disconnecting the Zumo XT between this sort of updates (maps/firmware) is normal and never was others! The reason why is, that this sort of updates are only really got installed, when your Zumo is starting. So GE can identify a successful update only when the Zumo XT has been started again!
Also, the small map updates are not really real 'maps', that are normally the POI files, which belong to the City Navigator maps, as parking lots (Parkopedia) and the Foursquare files - the 'real' maps(!) are only City Navigator itself, TimeZone-Map, the DEM-Map and the Offroad maps. The TimeZone-Map is also frequently updated, as countries change their timezones sometimes.
The 'real' maps always are the 'big ones', as City Navigator now has around 10Gb and the Offroad-Map (don't know the exact name because i've deleted it) is nearly the same size.
