Updating Maps and Software on XT2

Post by Wenzudeg »

Just got device! Really fast when compared to the 395LM. Screen is MUCH more nicer and touch is MUCH more sensitive. Totally different bookshelf :D Got it at a discount of €450 but then bought a 256Gb SD card for approximately €50. Will order a case and screen protector.

Maps installed are 2023.20! System is as old. What is the best method to update: via Garmin Express with cable or over Wi-Fi? The only other Garmin device which had the option of updating over Wi-Fi was the GPSMAP 67 but did not use Wi-Fi for it. Are there any pitfalls to avoid in the process?

TIA

Congratulations on your XT2.

I think that it is a personal choice.

I do not like the Zumo doing things that I am not aware of. For example if I am trying to work out what I did wrong, or what it did wrong, I don't want it changing the basic information that it is working with while I go and get myself a cup of coffee.

Neither do I want it affecting my wifi.

And do I really trust these people witht he password to my home internet ?

I normally disable the WiFi connection option and use the USB cable. And to avoid wear and tear on the USB socket - I unplug at the computer end rather than at the Zumo end.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

I normally use Garmin Express + cable to update my XT2. Doing updates over WiFi seems to miss the Cyclops ones.

There are two bonuses for doing it this way for me:

1) First is that the lengthy map updates, IIRC, require the XT2 to be connected to a satisfactory power source if you do chose to do it over the WiFi.
2) And, using Garmin Express then allows me to manage the maps so enabling them to be installed onto your PC for use in Basecamp.

Another thing I noticed is that it does not accept charge from 80W or 60W wall chargers. It is accepting charge from a smaller Wattage wall charger. Manual says 'at least 2A' but does not give a maximum. Are there an experiences of charging with a super-fast-charging wall chargers?

On a new XT2, you need to plug it into your charger - preferable 2.1 amps or more. Press the power button to turn the XT2 off - the screen should say

"Charging the Battery, Press the power key to Turn on."

It will then go completely black.

If you turn it on, the XT2 will use more power than it is getting from the charger. It will go flat - not as quickly as if it wasn't plugged into the charger, but it will go flat.

The good news is that the XT2 has a pretty good charge life. But you have to get a decent charge into it.

You will want to play with it. But what you really need to do is to leave it charging for a day. Not a work day, or a daytime day. A full 24 hours.
But I know that you won't - you'll come back to it and want to play again. And it will go flat again and you will think that you have bought a duff unit.

There are three things that will make it charge faster:

1. Wire the cradle into your motorbik battery and go for a ride.
2. Get a large transformer which supplies various voltages at different current rates, and plug your cradle into that. Put your Zumo in the cradle. I have one and a spare cradle on my desktop. I bought it for something else years ago and hardly ever used it. Then I found it and thought - I wonder if... It turns out to be the best thing that I ever bought for Zumos.
3. This is probably the most realistic solution for the XT2 before you get it on your bike - Get one of those power packs. They are about the same size as a phone. Don't get one off ebay or Amazon where you have no control over who supplies them. Dodgy batteries are dangerous.
Charge it up - they often come with just one cable - a USB C to USB C - but they also have a USB A socket - so make sure that you have a USBA to USB C as well. So you charge it up with the USB A to USB C cable. Then you can use the USB C to USB C cable to charge your XT from the power pack.

Make sure that when you get USB cables, they say that they are for charge (and synch). The one that comes with the power pack will certainly charge. You only need the charge and synch for connecting to your computer

I have copied this from a post I made under another topic. I did a test to see how long the XT2 lasted on a full charge and how long it took before it charged up from fully discharged. (I don't think I completed that test - but it took only an hour to reach half full from the power pack.

So I'm just simulating a route on the XT2 with no power. See how long it lasts before running out of battery. Screen at 100% brightness, no time out set.
07:00 - Started simulating a route to N Coast of Scotland. Battery almost full.
09:06 : Battery at 3/4 full
10:42 Battery showed 1/4 full
11:02 Battery showed narrowed red segment
11:06 Screen dimmed to 40% to conserve power
12:25 Still going - albeit on 40% screen brightness.
12:38 Dead.

So that's 5 and a half hours running a simulated route, 4 hours of which were at full brightness.

I plugged it into the power pack and turned the screen off - so that it said 'Charging' (etc) on a black screen.
At 13:39 the battery showed half full, green.

Thanks for the info jfheath. Have a Hama power bank but came only with USB C to USB A to charge it. Will try the power bank method and see how it goes. Sure it's strange that XT is not accepting high Wattage wall chargers. The one I am using is a OnePlus 80W one which I bought with the Pad 3 barely a month ago.

Update. It is charging with the 80W wall charger BUT apparently it must be in Sleep Mode and not switched off completely. Manual says that in Sleep Mode it charges faster. No mention of charging in Off Mode.

I use a wall charger that shows the amps being used by the unit to see what is going in (in its opinion!)

@Wenzudeg Do you know that you can see what the XT2 thinks is going into the unit?

To do this, with the XT2 switched on and in the map page press the speed area at the bottom left of the screen. Then on the area that shows the current speed, press it for about 5 seconds and it should change to "Diagnostics Page". Select the "Developer Info" and the the "Power Source (PSRC). Scroll down and one line has the "Batt current" which shows the power going into the battery. Sorry if you already knew this.
