I don't know what the hub does, I only tried it because I knew many Mac users could not connect at all without a hub. Maybe it slows down the transfer, or maybe it serves as a regulator to keep the transmit/receive signals in sync? Garmin tends to use old tech which can't keep up with newer computers. I really would have expected the XT to use a USB-C connection and support exFAT microSD cards.

If it's a powered hub, that boost in available voltage has been the key difference for some devices on some Macs. How's that for a vague answer?

I would say that answer was slightly somewhat non-specific.

My hub accepts a power input, but I have never needed it.

Just installed 2027.10 using WiFi and it went quickly (around 25 minutes, despite an initial prediction of 3 hours) and works fine, so I'm no longer going to use Express for map updates.
