XT2 maps for Africa unwanted additions and no "update"

Post by Oop North John »

My XT2 allows varying regions to be downloaded onto it and the PC via Garmin EXpress and the "Manage Maps" blue tab. I had downloaded CN NTU North Africa 2026.10 as I'm hopefully going to Morocco in April 2206 onto both the XT2 and Laptop on the 18th October 2025.

Garmin Express told me I had map updates tonight including the CN North Africa so I chose to update them. Now though CN North Africa NTU is still at 2026.10, but I also have East and West Africa + Southern Africa DEM, TopoActive PS Lite Africa 2025.10, CN East and West Africa NTU and CN Southern Africa NT. Quite a few extra maps.

Garmin Express and "manage maps" shows under the "My maps" one base map, and one region - Europe. Next tab is "Removable storage" and it just has "Africa ticked, of you look at the view it just shows the northern Africa countries Next tab "Computor" has the install to computor "City Navigator North Africa as well as East, West and South Africa.

No real problem, but confusing when an "update" doesn't update what it says it will, but adds on extra mapping that makes it look like you've selected something wrongly. HTH helps someone else.

This happened quite a few years ago now to the EU map when Garmin decided to update those with just the UK map to the full EU map, saved them producing so many different map sets. Looks like they've now done that with Africa.

The map file size grows as more information is added to the map with each update. The FAT32 file format used by a Zumo is limited to 4 GB per file, so the map must be broken into sections when the file becomes too large. Installed for Basecamp on a computer without the FAT32 restriction, your Africa map is probably a single file. Topoactive and DEM maps contain different types of data, and update less frequently than the NTU or NT maps.

CN North America NT on my PC was split to United States and Canada & Mexico for the Zumo several years ago. I think Europe was split a few years before North America.

Africa was split into separate regions eg North Africa, it now has extra areas so seems to be the opposite of breaking down large regions?
