XT - Map scales

Post by Mikey »

Last week I took a 4 day ride (1,600km) from my home. During the trip, the daily routes (1,2,3,4) I had prepared in Basecamp, and loaded onto the XT’s micro-SD performed flawlessly over the mix of Shapings and Waypoints. Thank you to all forum members for help in educating me in BC and XT so far.

When I returned home, I refined some of the used route points for future use. I assume now I will have to delete the trip routes used from the XT and micro SD card, before loading the refined versions onto the SD. Comments on this aspect will be appreciated.

On Day 4, I descended the Great Dividing Range about 200km from home. I was impressed by the XT map that was showing in 3D at a small scale (large area). The map showed green mountains and valleys with the magenta winding its way down the range onto to coastal plain where the route straightens and mostly follows a large river.

I caught up on some traffic that demanded my attention and when I glanced at the map again the scale had zoomed-in to a larger scale. This made me wonder why the map scales had changed. I would appreciate comments on the XT map scales thank you.

You don’t need to, but it makes life easier to avoid a clash of file names and route names. The XT will happily load the same route name twice and tag a number onto the end of the name. If your route name is longer than the display, you never get to see that number.

Delete them from the XT screen and then delete the gpx file that created them. I tend to empty my Zumos between each trip. For that I use the Zumo screen to delete routes, tracks, waypoints / favourites / saved , history. Then attach the usb cable and delete Current.gpx from the gpx folder. also delete temp.gpx and any other gpx files contains your routes. Leave position.gpx and CurrentTrackLog.gpx. Also delete any of your gpx route files from the sd card.

Restart the Zumo and check that they have all gone.

There is an option under map display (I think) to auto zoom. As you speed up, the map zooms out. As you slow down, it zooms in. There are about three levels of zoom, I think. You had caught up some cars ahead, so you had slowed down. So the map zooms in.

You can turn it off so that the display stays at the zoom level that you set by pressing the +/- keys on the screen. When I did that I realised how useful the auto zoom feature is. The handlebar controller for the XT2 has those +/- buttons, but you have to have auto zoom turned off to use them. It is a pain, because every time you glance at the screen it is at the wrong zoom levels!

I’ve seen a setting in one of the files that I think would allow you to change the speed at which zoom levels change. At least that is what I think they would do. I’ve never played with it to find out.

I love that 3d map display. Here in Yorkshire Uk, it is hilly, but the hills rarely ride above 2,500 ft. But the display was so impressive when we went to Europe and the Alps. It’s pretty impressive in Scotland too.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Thank you JFH. I do need to tidy up the XT files. I have quite a few routes with similar names.

Re. Map scales - I was surprised to see the mountains, valleys and magenta showing on the XT, a first time and I enjoyed it. I need to do a bit more research on the topic of map scale and features, which is not an aspect I have given much attention to.

The XT was a valuable companion on my recent trip (fun too). I was navigating in areas previously untravelled with often few landmarks to give me confidence of my location.

Thank you, MikeY
