Finished With Garmin Motorcycle GPS!

Post by Les »

Whilst I'm aware that my ZUMO 660LM is getting on a bit, it's still fully functional, but Garmin in their wisdom have decided that the Lifetime Mapping isn't any more.

Apparently even though a memory card gives it plenty of space for new maps they have stopped producing City Navigator Europe NT because of lack of memory ?!

After exchanging messages via Instagram, there was a suggestion I should lash out on the latest ZUMO... no chance.. I've bought myself a little 'Beeline' satnav, it takes a bit of getting used to after the ZUMO, but looks more in keeping with my Royal Enfield Interceptor and works very well.

I'll use use the two Garmin satnavs we have, a camper version, and my wife's little car one.

I've tried OSM but without much success, the routing didn't work properly and took ages to find a route, I may have downloaded a duff map selection, but I'll try again with your link..

Thanks

Well that was a complete success, downloaded all of Europe, works in Mapsource and Basecamp much more detail than Garmin Maps and can create custom routes too..

I am glad that worked out for you. The only thing I've missed using openmapchest.org maps is speed limit data - a common issue with all OSM maps, I think. So no onscreen display of the speed limit for the current road, and ETA estimates may be incorrect.

I've not tried the openmapchest source, however I have found 1 issue with the openstreetmaps here in the states, they don't have a good address database for searching/routing.
The best routing I've been able to accomplish is by utilizing lat/long coordinates.
Other than that, the maps are more up to date than the Garmin ones, and have more information when it comes to nature trails, bike routes, and the like.
