So as a last measure I contacted Garmin support, and to be fair they did try to help getting Europe and Africa onto the 595, but we failed.

So, the outcome is that it looks like I'll get 30% of a new XT2 as the 595 isn't behaving as it should. Current UK retail is £529 so that would mean it would be about £370 I calculate. Not a bad offer, but I already have a XT2, which I got quite cheaply, and on ebay it looks like I might get more for it (might being the operative word).

It was quite nice having a route in Basecamp, with shaping points, and transferring it to a zumo, and the route stayed the same. Still has the dull screen and stutter when announcing directions, and lost satellite reception in the middle of nowhere.

Decisions, decisions :?

I'm struggling to understand why you have the problem. Both my 590s with 595 firmware have multiple regions on them - both have Europe, one has Southern Africa and the other has Australia/NZ and North America. Never had a problem getting these to work, so it's strange. One of mine is an everyday 590, the other is a Harley Davidson branded one - a dealer demo model, so only 4GB RAM, yet still manages the 3 regions...

I have a Travel Edition 595 which should allow two versions of CN mapping if there's space, without me having to buy the second one. I think that there's 14gb of internal space so should be able to accept the CN EU and CN Africa. But, I'm guessing that Garmin Express has had an update that prevents this. I tried rolling back GE, but I can only use it at 7.25 as it won't run on earlier ones as it says there's a critical update, and this prevents GE from opening.

I could buy the CN Africa at £110, but shouldn't have to. Or could use OSM mapping, but prefer not to.

I only use Express to update the EU maps. All other maps (Aus/NZ, North America, Southern Africa) I load simply by putting the appropriate files on the SD card. Doesn't that work for the Travel Edition too (I'm completely unfamiliar with it...)

You'll have 16GB RAM I think, same as the normal Zumo. The HD branded ones have 8GB, and my HD dealer Demo one has 4GB, but loading maps on the SD card allows the three separate ones on even the 4GB (which actually came with only a US Demo map, and is not an LM model) HD one.

No, the Travel Edition works differently, it allows, or at least should, one device to have 2 Garmin CN maps, one that has to remain and the other one that can be swapped out for other CN maps, using Express.

Is that to say the Travel Edition cannot take maps on an SD card?

No, wrong. But, Garmin Express which controls the download / change of maps will not allow me to have two different CN areas on the internal or any external storage on my 595.

So what actually happens if you manually - i.e. no involvement from Express - put another region on the SD Card, John?

I don't know as I'd have to buy the CN mapping, my XT2 will be having a reprieve as it will let me have CN EU and Africa on it, using Garmin Express.
