Mounting the zumo cradle seems to require a hard wire connection. When not using the zumo for long periods of time, like months, what do some of you do with the mount? Do you just leave it attached to wherever? Do you tuck it away somewhere on the bike?

Mine stays on my bike all of the time. I always have the Zumo on, even if I don't have a route planned, so as to get traffic alerts, monitor my tyre pressures, check the weather ahead, etc... Valuable for a lot beyond route instructions.

The mount is indeed hardwired so removing it when not riding isn't practical. Do you have a concern about leaving mounted at all times? As for the satnav itself, mine comes off the cradle whenever I am not riding. It gets locked in the trunk during short stops, comes into the motel during overnights, and into my home office when at home.

Fore safety reasons, anything that I have added extra comes from a single 30A cable feed direct from the battery with a single 30A lead back to the battery. That has a a 30A fuse wired in very close to the battery with triple insulation and cable tied to avoid vibration.

That feeds into a 40A relay which is turned on by the ignition circuit.

The Zumo does not require that overkill, but the point is that I can turn off my ignition and all of my additional circuits go dead.

The Zumos dont require much power, but you might be able to find a circuit that has some spare capacity which turns off when the ignition is off, and which will not overload existing circuits.

Like others, mine stays on 24/7. My 590 mount has a snap on cover that I use to give it some protection, mostly from dust.

I am just worried about vandalism. I think I might put a water proof connector between the power and the zumo.

I don't know about all zumo's but the cradle for my XT includes a waterproof cap that covers the connector pins. As for vandalism, I worry about that when it comes to the device but never gave it a thought in regards to the cradle only. Now that I have I remain unconcerned. A thief would have to cut the power cable rendering it useless, and a vandal, well, a slashed seat or punctured tire is more worrisome than the cradle.

Ditto the sentiments here. My cradle stays mounted all the time and the units goes on and comes off as required. I use the cover thing too, and it's fine. In the last 23 yrs and travels covering 23 states, I have had exactly zero vandalism. This doesn't mean I'll drop my guard but it does afford a little relaxation of the mind from worry.

My XT is wired to an ignition-powered relay. I have a cover that clips over the entire surface of the mount when the XT is not attached.
