garmin cure 3 - can't download (390LM stuck in Boot-up loop)

Post by Bikertyke »

Hi All
I'm going quietly mad trying to get my 390LM back working. It's stuck in a boot-up loop after updating to the latest maps. I've read many forums here & elsewhere, with barely comprehensible instructions, but it looks like I need Garmin cure 3 software to progress. However, it only seems to be available via the "GPS Power" site. Which it is impossible to register on. Their FB page shows many frustrated users going back to last February. After registering, no confirmatory e-mail is received. Without this, you can't access GC3, or any other links on their site. I've tried a couple of other routes, but they end in 404 errors, or are blanked out.
So - does anyone here know how to download Garmin cure 3? Or have a file they can post or pm me with? And any other stuff I may need, like the GCD-file and related software? (It's at this point where I really have very little idea what I need or what these various files do)

Meanwhile, here the full story, in case anyone can give advice an average non IT geek can understand!
Downloaded latest mapping, CN Eu 2026.20 direct to my 390, using Garmin Express. This took several attempts, as it kept failing to finish, or returned an error message. But it eventually claimed success. Unfortunately, what it had succeeded at was to kill my unit. It is now stuck in a loop just showing the "Garmin" intro page. then switching off.
Pressing bottom right corner while switching on will produce brief recognition on my PC. You get the "Bing!" of a connected device. It won't show in the list of drives, but does appear briefly in "Device Manager" as a Garmin Device, for about 15 seconds, or until I release my finger. I presume this is the "Pre-Boot-Up" state?
I made a cloned copy of the unit by inserting a newly formatted SD card into my laptop and using a saved copy of my unit's GarminDevice.xml file, which my PC happily recognised as my 390, and downloaded the updated maps using Garmin Express. The three gmapprom files ( .gma, .img, .uni) loaded into the "system" folder, as expected from the cloning instructions. Following these instructions, I moved them to a "Map" folder. It's notable that, unlike in the instructions, there was already a "Map" folder created, which had three map files in them, named D6159320A.gma, etc. I've no idea what these files are. The img file here was slightly smaller than the gmapprom file - 3.4GB / 3.55GB. Sadly, when reinserted in the 390, this made no difference. It's still stuck at the initial "garmin" screen.
I noted that my Laptop claimed both the .img files were again corrupted after downloading them, but had rather hoped that at least the card would enable the 390 to be recognised as a functioning unit.

I have read much info already, but most seems to relate to the 395 or less similar devices, and it isn't clear if the 390 needs the same fixes, and if the required software/firmware is the same. I'd really appreciate any help in how to progress from here.
