590 Cradle v 390 Cradle

Post by Yogi »

Hi, I'm looking to set up just usb charging on my motorbike for my Zumo 590, I only have the car cradle with speaker at the rear. Will a bare Zumo 340/390 motorbike cradle without it's cable hold my Zumo 590 sat nav? The bare 390 cradle can easily be sourced, but the actual '590' 18 pin cradle/cable are expensive and difficult to get. Thanks

They will, but require the use of a usb cable to power, and they are not a very good idea on motorcycles. The vibration will likely damage the socket and the connection to the circuit board.

However - see my later comment below - as the car cradle doesn't rely on the Zumo 590 usb socket.
Have owned Zumo 550, 660 == Now have Zumo XT2, XT, 595, 590, Headache
Use Basecamp (mainly), MyRouteApp (sometimes), Competent with Tread for XT2, Can use Explore for XT - but it offers nothing that I want !

Garmin used that 18 pin connector for several devices besides the 590/595. Look also for Zumo 660 mounts and the Aera mount used for aviation. They may still seem expensive , but they will expand your options.

One reason the standard 590 mount is so expensive is that it has extra wiring for audio inputs and outputs and a USB power outlet. All you really need is the 12V power input and an AMPS mount.

The 590 / 595 cradles are interchangeable.
I guess that the 39x series uses the same cradle - they look similar but I do not know for certain.

The Zumo 660 cradle will not accomodate the 590 case. I still have a 660 cradle so I went out with my 590 case to check. No.

However - looking at the car cradle for the 590 - I see that the USB socket is in the side of the cradle - it doesn't rely on the socket in the Zumo itself - which negates my earlier comment. So you could support that lead - say with some hot melt glue around the joint, a large cable tie taped in a loop to stop the lead from vibrating and secured close to the end of the loop to take any weight from the rest of the cable.

How you deal with the ball and socket, I don't know - as the ball is much smaller than a RAM ball and the suction cup isn't going to stay in place for very long with the vibration of the motorbike.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Whichever way I look at it the only reliable method is to look for the bespoke motorcycle cradle for the 590/595....Garmin certainly didn't want much interchangeable parts between models.

I have a brand new one - still in original bag, which I've been keeping as a spare. Might be persuaded to part with it for a decent price though.
